Emily Anderson Notches Career-High 18 Points to Power 'Bears Past Leopards, 74-48

Box Score BOSTON--Sophomore Emily Anderson tallied a career-high 18 points to lead all scorers, junior Chelsea Vujs notched 14 and senior captain Sam McCann added 10 to pace Western New England to an easy 74-48 victory over Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action at the Tansey Gymnasium on Thursday. With their largest road win in two seasons, the Golden Bears snap a two-game losing streak to improve to 9-4 overall and 4-3 in the CCC.

Carly Rogers and Rachael Camara had 14 and 10 points, respectively, for the host Leopards, who fall to 3-6 on the season and 1-6 in the conference.

Anderson had an efficient night that was a study of instant offense, playing just 17 minutes off the bench while making six of 11 field goals, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, and she converted both free throw attempts. She also had three rebounds. Her previous best was 16 points against Lasell on Nov. 25.

Western New England had its best game of 2014-15 shooting the basketball as every player in the lineup scored at least one point. The Golden Bears made 30 of their 59 field goal attempts for a .508 percentage and an impressive 9-of-17 from downtown for a 52.9 three-point clip. Junior Samantha Howe, who has battled through injuries since the 2013-14 campaign, scored her first four points of the season, and freshman Caroline Teti registered her first career points in her collegiate debut.

It was the Golden Bears' offense but the defense that paved the way to a commanding 33-19 halftime advantage. Wentworth shot only 35 percent from the floor and had nine turnovers. Sophomore Sammie Battaini (4 points) hit a jumper for a 4-2 lead at 18:01 on the clock and WNE would not trail after that.

With the score 18-15 with 8:02 left, WNE went on 15-4 run to end the half that was capped by a nice feed from sophomore Paige Young (2 points, 5 rebounds) who drew the defense away from her and found a cutting Anderson down low in the key for an uncontested layup with 3 seconds left. Battaini finished with a game-high six assists. For Wentworth, Haley Sabino and Camara had six rebounds apiece, and Riselly Deoleo and Camara both had four helpers.

In the second half, the Golden Bears shot 65.4 percent from the field (17-26) and never let the Leopards get within single digits. Vujs had a game-best eight rebounds and five assists, and sophomore Sammie Olson (8 points, 3 assists, 1 blocked shot) pulled down seven boards.

Western New England also shined on the glass and sharing the ball, outrebounding Wentworth 40-23 and dishing a season-high 23 assists on 30 made field goals.

The Golden Bears doubled up Gordon College, 68-34, in Wenham on Jan. 23, 2013.

Western New England returns home on Saturday to host CCC rival Endicott at 1 p.m. in the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house.
