BIDDEFORD, ME - The Western New England men's soccer team took advantage of a University of New England own goal in the 81
st minute that proved to be the difference as the Golden Bears held on for a 4-3 victory Saturday (Oct. 10) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
This was the fourth consecutive victory for Coach
Devin O'Neill's squad who moved to 7-5 overall while remaining perfect in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 5-0 ledger.
Western New England led 2-0 at halftime following goals by
Logan Pingree (from
Colin Macdonald) in the 20
th minute and
Brandon Bolger (from
Neil Williams and
Connor Rubin) in the 38
th minute.
That set the stage for a wild second half that featured five goals, including two in the final 10 minutes.
University of New England (2-10, 0-5 CCC) made it 2-1 when
Nick Paine (from
Will Bushey) netted a goal in the 53
rd minute.
Scott Trautwein gave the Golden Bears another two-shot advantage in the 61
st minute before
Finn Ducker (from
Ryan Rousseau and
Jeremy Longchamp) again got the hosts to within one in the 68
th minute.
Western New England then notched a crucial insurance goal when a Nor'easter defender inadvertently knocked in a long throw-in my Macdonald in the 81
st minute.
Dan Good tallied the final goal (from Bushey) with 1:54 left in the match.
Kevin Strobel compiled four saves for the Golden Bears while
Elijah Leverett turned away seven shots for UNE.
Western New England held a 15-10 shot advantage over the upset-minded Nor'easters.
