BREWSTER, Mass. (October 25, 2015) - The Western New England University men's golf team sits in a tie for seventh place after posting a score of 316 on day one of the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships today at The Captains Course in Brewster, Mass.
Western New England finished round one tied with Worcester State University, as Babson College leads the 22-team field with a score of 305. Rhode Island College (307) sits two shots behind Babson, while Johnson & Wales University and Nichols College each turned in 308s for a two-way tie in third. St. Joseph's (Maine) College rounded out the top five with a score of 312 after 18 holes. Castleton (Vt.) University's Zachary Temple tops the leader board by two strokes after shooting a two-under par 70 during opening round action today.
Junior
Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led the way for the Golden Bears, shooting a two-over 74, good for a seventh-place tie with Dylan Casserly of Nichols.
Classmate
Joe DaSilva (Watertown, Conn.) turned in a score of 80, placing him in a 12-way tie for 35
th, while junior
Nick Shemkovitz (Meriden, Conn.) and sophomore
John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) finished one stroke back of DaSilva in a 13-way tie for 47
th.
Rounding out the Western New England participants today was sophomore
Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.), who is tied for 97
th in the 110-player field after shooting a 91 on the opening 18 holes of the tournament.
