SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 26, 2025) – For the third time this season, the WNE men's golf team picked up a first-place finish led by their first-year phenomenon
Derek Johnson, shooting an even par, 71, at his home course of Wilbraham Country Club at the Western New England Invitational, defeating Eastern Connecticut State University, Western Connecticut State University, and Springfield College.
How it Happened:
The Golden Bears got off to a great start, seeing three of the four top finishes come from their group "A".
Derek Johnson finished on top of 28 overall golfers for Western New England, shooting an even par on his home course, a 71 overall.
Kyle Kilmas shot two strokes more and finished in third place for Western New England in the event, coming in with a score of 73.
Alex Noti was right behind Kilmas, finishing tied for fourth place overall in the event, picking up a 76, five strokes over par.
Group B for Western New England would see two pick up a 77 overall, shooting six shots over par for the day.
Ryan Schlehuber and
Michael Bluhm would do just that for the blue and gold.
Kyle DeGroff came in a stroke above the two from group B as DeGroff finished seven strokes over par for the Golden Bears, representing group A.
Rian Faiq, representing WNE's group B, also scored a 78 overall for the blue and gold.
Robert DeFeo came in with an 80 overall, his lowest score in his third match of the season, second this spring. DeFeo shot nine strokes over par for WNE's B group.
Dylan Fortunato golfed in his final outing on Saturday with the Golden Bears, coming in with an 82, shooting 11 strokes over par.
Jeremy Burke (84, +13) and
Joshua Vaughan (93, +22) also saw action on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Wilbraham Country Club.
