Men's Golf Finishes Seventh at NEIGA Championships

BREWSTER, Mass. (October 26, 2015) -
The Western New England University men's golf team followed up its opening round score of 316 by shooting a 314 today during round two action of the 81st annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships on its way to a seventh place finish at The Captains Course in Brewster, Mass.
Western New England's two day score of 630 was just a stroke behind the University of Southern Maine and St. Joseph's (Maine) College, which tied for fifth place in the 22-team field with matching scores of 629. Rhode Island College rallied from a two-stroke deficit after the opening round to claim the team title (618), while Salem State University (624) and Babson College (624) finished in a tie for second and Nichols College (626) placed fourth. Rhode Island College's Jonathan Cooper shot a two-over par 74 today to take the individual title with a combined score of 147.

Western New England junior Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who sat in a tie for seventh place after shooting a 74 yesterday, turned in an 80 today to finish the tournament in a five-way tie for tenth place with a score of 154.
 
Sophomore John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) followed up his opening round 81 with a team-best 75 today, climbing all the way up to a tie for 18th after finishing day one in 47th. Junior Joe DaSilva (Watertown, Conn.) improved upon his first round score of 80 by shooting a 78 today, as his combined total of 158 was good for a six-way tie for 28th in the 110-player field.

Junior Nick Shemkovitz (Meriden, Conn.) and sophomore Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished in ties for 71st and 85th, respectively, after posting scores of 85 and 81 today.

With the conclusion of the tournament, Western New England sees its fall schedule come to a close and will return to  action in the spring.
