Mike Gelineau Posts Game-High 25 Points as 'Bears Mount Huge Rally at Salve Regina

Box Score NEWPORT, R.I.--Western New England sophomore Mike Gelineau led all scorers with 25 points, but it was Barrett Hanlon's short jumper with 4 seconds left that lifted host Salve Regina to a 58-56 victory in a Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball game on Tuesday at the Rodgers Recreation Center. The Golden Bears, who stormed back from a 21-point deficit to tie it late, fall to 8-16 overall and 6-11 in the CCC. The Seahawks improve to 6-18 on the season and 3-14 in the conference on Senior Night.

Senior co-captain Musa Elsir added 16 points for the Golden Bears, who shot 36 percent from the field. Elsir had a team-high six rebounds, too. Graduate co-captain Nick DeFeo contributed nine points.

Hanlon (4 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists) finished with 17 points on 7-for-10 field goal shooting and Bryce Boggs came off the Salve bench to net 12. Brenden Fowler led the way with seven boards.

Western New England came all the way back after being down 30-9 with 5 minutes and 11 seconds left in the first half, with Gelineau connecting on a layup with 17 seconds to make it 56-all. Gelineau hit three 3-pointers and a layup in a span of 1:18 to knot the game.

Coming out of a Salve timeout, Hanlon received the inbounds pass at halfcourt and dribbled up the right side to make a 10-foot jumpshot for the go-ahead basket. But the Golden Bears still had a chance to tie the game to force overtime or go for the win, as Gelineau's three-point attempt from the left wing hit the back of the rim at the final buzzer.

Salve Regina's miscues on front ends of bonus free-throw shooting gave WNE its opportunity to snatch a victory.

After a Zack Askew layup started the scoring, Jordan's jumper tied the score and MacKinnon's corner three gave Salve Regina its first lead. The Seahawks never trailed again.

John King's first 3-pointer started a 25-4 run for Salve Regina which covered nine and a half minutes. Boggs and Chris O'Keefe joined their senior mates in the long-range shooting.

Western New England ended the first half with a 9-2 run, and then started the second half outscoring Salve Regina, 18-7, to close within three points (39-36 at 12:04).

Adam Quinlan hit two layups during a 15-6 run for Salve Regina which bumped its lead to 12 (54-42) with 4:30 on the clock.

Salve Regina outshot WNE from the field, 47.1 percent (24-51) to 36.0 percent (18-50). The Seahawks also won the battle of the glass, 36-29, and had a 28-12 scoring edge in the paint.

Western New England will have its regular-season finale at 1 p.m. Saturday with a trip to Endicott in Beverly, Mass.
