Chelsea Vujs pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds to propel the Western New England University women's basketball team to a 52-47 road win Saturday to spoil Senior Day for Endicott College at the MacDonald Gymnasium. With the victory, the Golden Bears (16-9 overall) clinch the No. 4 seed in next week's Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Tournament with an 11-7 CCC mark. The Gulls end the regular season with an 11-14 record and 7-11 conference mark.
Junior Kelsey Cuddy had a game-high 14 points and she was the only Endicott student-athlete in double figures.
Western New England made 19 of 47 field goals for a .404 percentage while Endicott was 16 for 51 at .314.
WNE crashed the boards claiming 41 to the Gulls' 27, led by 10 boards from Vujs. The Golden Bears also showed depth by scoring 18 total bench points led by seven apiece from sophomore duo
Paige Young and
Emily Anderson.Western New England never trailed in the contest, darting to a 7-0 lead on a Vujs (7 points) three-pointer bookended between lay-ups by McCann and freshman
Dorothy O'Neill (4 points, 5 assists, 2 steals).
The Golden Bears held Endicott without a field goal until 15 minutes and 41 seconds left in the first half when Cuddy made a lay-in. McCann responded with a short jumper and 3ball to give WNE its biggest lead of the afternoon at 12-3. With some key shots from Cuddy and Kayleen Whall (7 points, 8 rebounds), Endicott was back in the game by the 13-minute mark.
The first half was a battle as WNE took only a three-point advantage into the locker room at 24-21. Carley Stauffer (8 points) nailed a deep trey with 2:40 on the clock to help keep the Gulls close by the end of the half.
By the 11:30 mark remaining in the contest, the Gulls were within one, 32-31, after a clutch 3-pointer from Cuddy but after some strong shooting from Young the Golden Bears were able to pull away despite the last minute shots from both freshman Sam Charette (4 points) and Stauffer. Amanda Lopez's four points--in the final minutes to secure the five point win.
Western New England will host fifth-seeded Eastern Nazarene (12-13 overall, 10-8 CCC) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house. Endicott will travel to No. 2 Roger Williams as the seventh seed in the CCC Tournament First Round on Tuesday.
