Crosstown Rival Springfield College Snaps 'Bears 23-Game Regular-Season Win Streak

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior tri-captain Jessica Scannapieco scored a hat-trick, and junior Taylor Scialdone matched her with three points on a goal and two assists, as the Western New England University women's lacrosse team lost its 2015 season opener to Springfield College, 19-9, at Stagg Field on Saturday afternoon. The host Pride improve to 2-0 overall while snapping Golden Bear school records for consecutive regular-season wins (23) and a 13-road win streak.

Michelle Dorsey led Springfield with eight goals, Heather Raniolo pumped in four goals and three assists, and defender Olivia Cabral had five assists and three ground balls.

Dorsey staked the Pride to a 3-0 lead in the first half as the hosts never trailed.

Scialdone put Western New England on the scoreboard with an assist from senior Kaitlynn Stevens at the 16-minute, 49-second mark, making it 3-1. Raniolo and Dorsey then upped the lead to 5-1.

Western New England climbed within three on a pair of occasions in the first half, the last coming after Scannapieco buried a shot on the run to make it a 7-4 contest with 45 seconds left in the half.

Raniolo, however, batted a ball out of midair into the back of the cage as the horn sounded at the end of the first half as the Pride headed into the break with an 8-4 lead.

Scannapieco kicked off the second-half scoring at the 26:20 mark, but the Pride reeled off six unanswered goals by six different goal scorers, including four in a 1:55 span, to blow the game open.

Springfield held a 32-18 shots advantage, 18 to 16 in ground balls, and 19-10 in draw controls.

Western New England goalies senior Emily Castleman (3), freshman Shannon McFadden (2) and senior Melissa Perry (3) combined to make eight saves. Gabriella Anderson needed to make five saves in 47 minutes of action to earn the win for the Pride. Four different Golden Bears recorded two ground balls, including Perry.

Before today, the last time an opponent beat the Golden Bears during the regular season was Westfield State, 18-12, on April 4, 2013, at Golden Bear Stadium. The last time WNE lost on the road was at Gordon College, 14-13, on March 27, 2013.

Western New England will make its home debut against Westfield on Tuesday (4 p.m.) at Golden Bear Stadium. Springfield will now prep for a showdown with nationally-ranked Trinity on the same day.
