Strong First Half Carries Women's Lacrosse Past Host Gordon College, 19-8

Box Score WENHAM, Mass.--Junior Taylor Scialdone topped all scorers with a season-high eight points on four goals and four assists, and Western New England University used a fast start, as the Golden Bears dispatched Gordon College, 19-8, in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday at the Brigham Complex. Western New England improves to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the CCC, while the Fighting Scots fall to 5-5 on the season and 2-2 in the conference.

Senior Kaitlynn Stevens (5 goals, 1 assist) and junior Brooke Kumnick (1 goal, 5 assists) added six points apiece for the Golden Bears, who stormed to a 15-5 halftime lead. Senior tri-captain Jessica Scannapieco had an excellent all-around game that included a career-best 19 draw controls, three goals, two caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Jessica Castelline led the way for Gordon with three goals, followed by Abby Illian with a pair and Bailey Grinnell contributed three points (2 assists). Illian also led the Fighting Scots with six ground balls.

Just 48 seconds into the contest, Illian scored the first of her two goals on the day to hand the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead.

WNE, however, answered with a flurry of five goals in a span of 3 minutes and 12 seconds to go up 5-1 and the visitors never looked back. The Golden Bears, in fact, used another 5-0 run later in the first half to take a commanding 12-4 lead with 7:34 left.

Scialdone figured into the last three goals of the half as she found the back of the cage, unassisted, at the 6:30 mark and assisted on goals by junior Tori Cirocco (2 goals, 1 assist, 3 ground balls, 3 caused turnovers) and Kumnick at 5:34 and 2:51, respectively.

Senior Emily Castleman made eight saves and allowed six goals in the first 42:51 to pick up the victory (8-1), and freshman Shannon McFadden played the final 17:09 while she posted four saves and gave up two tallies.

In the second half, Stevens and Scialdone extended the Golden Bears' biggest lead to 17-5 with 21:03 remaining.

Castelline scored her team-leading goals 31 and 32 and Grinnell had the Fighting Scots' other of the period. Cirocco had a man-up goal from Stevens and freshman Julia Winer accounted for WNE's final goal.

Western New England's next outing will be on Thursday at Bridgewater State University in a non-conference tilt starting at 7 p.m.
