Kaitlynn Stevens' Seven Goals, Taylor Scialdone's Five Help 'Bears Dismiss Colonels

Box Score MILTON, Mass.--Senior Kaitlynn Stevens pumped in game highs of 11 points, seven goals and four assists, and junior Taylor Scialdone added five goals, as Western New England defeated host Curry, 19-10, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse contest on Saturday at Walter M. Katz Field. The Golden Bears won their 11th game in a row to improve to 11-1 on the season and 5-0 in the CCC, while the Colonels slip to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Malorie Knowlton led Curry with four goals and five points while Kelly Parker and Rachael Lawrence both had three points on two goals and an assist.

The visitors, who never trailed in the game, jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the 20:02 mark on goals by senior tri-captain Jessica Scannapieco, Stevens, two from Scialdone and junior Brooke Kumnick. Knowlton put the Colonels on the scoreboard with 18 minutes and 49 seconds left in the first half.

The Golden Bears responded with two more nets, one from Scialdone at 18:10 and Scannapieco at 16:45. The Colonels cut the lead to 9-4 after netting back-to-back goals, the first at 8:18 from junior defenseman Alexis Cran followed by sophomore attack Lauren Carroll. Western New England found the back of the net for their tenth of the game with 1:24 remaining in the half from Stevens. The final minute saw each team scoring, starting with a Colonels goal coming by Knowlton with just 46 seconds remaining. The Golden Bears would end the half with a goal from freshman attack Julia Winer with 21 seconds showing on the clock to head into the break leading 11-5.

Western New England got on the board 53 seconds into the second half for a seven-goal lead. Curry, however, wouldn't go down without a fight as it registered four unanswered goals to make it 12-9 in WNE's favor. Parker and Lawrence scored 20 seconds apart at the 25:40 and 25:20 marks. Parker would net her second of the game with 23:15 remaining. Knowlton followed off an assist from Lawrence with just over 21 minutes left to put the Colonels within three.

But Western New England sealed the win with a five-goal run, led by Scialdone and Stevens who each recorded two, to increase its lead to 17-9 with 11:55 left. The Golden Bears didn't allow the Colonels to get any closer after that.

Freshman Shannon McFadden posted a road career-high of six saves over the final 23:15. The Colonels senior goalkeeper Christina Wallis recorded a career-high 16 stops.

Western New England will host CCC opponent Roger Williams University in a battle for first place on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Golden Bear Stadium. Curry is next in action when it entertains conference foe University of New England that same afternoon at 4 p.m.
