Western New England Stifles Bridgewater State Offensively, Defensively in 'Bears Battle

Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass.--The Western New England University women's lacrosse team scored a season high in goals and held an opponent to single digits for the third straight outing on Thursday evening to beat Bridgewater State University handily, 21-9, in non-conference action at Swenson Field. The Golden Bears are now 9-1 overall while the host Bears drop to 4-5 on the season.

Western New England senior Kaitlynn Stevens poured in seven goals, seven assists and 14 total points to top all players in all three categories. Junior Taylor Scialdone added 9 nine points on four goals and five assists, and senior tri-captain Jessica Scannapieco also had four goals among five points.

Senior Riley Cachelin paced Bridgewater with 3+3=6 scoring totals and juniors Marissa Yowell, Lauren Geary both had two goals.

Western New England used a 10-0 first-half run to take a commanding 12-3 lead into the intermission. Scialdone and Stevens netted three goals apiece during the run.

After the teams exchanged goals to open the second half, the Bears reeled off four straight markers to cut the deficit to 13-8 with 23 minutes and 30 seconds remaining. Geary potted a pair to highlight the surge.

Following a timeout, back-to-back tallies from Stevens and Scannapieco extended the visitors' lead to 15-8. The Golden Bears outscored the Bears 8-1 over the final 23 minutes, with Stevens figuring in all eight WNE goals--three of her own coupled with five assists.

Western New England held a 36-26 shots advantage for the game as well as a 21-11 edge in draw controls. Stevens and Scannapieco registered eight draws apiece, while Geary led the Bridgewater State with six.

Senior netminder Emily Castleman made six saves to post her ninth win of the season between the pipes for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Allie Forman and junior Chandler Ross combined to record nine saves for the Bears.

The Golden Bears are off until next Wednesday when they entertain Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Salve Regina University at 4 p.m. at Golden Bear Stadium. Bridgewater travels to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.) for a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game with the Buccaneers.
