Box Score BOSTON--Western New England University used a fast start in the first half to cruise past host Wentworth Institute of Technology, 17-7, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse regular-season finale for both schools on Wednesday evening at Sweeney Field. Western New England improves to 14-2 overall and 8-0 in the CCC, while the Leopards finish at 4-9 on the season--a school record for wins--and 0-8 in the conference.
Junior
Taylor Scialdone led all scorers with four goals and six points for the Golden Bears, who led 13-3 after 30 minutes. Senior
Kaitlynn Stevens added five points on three goals and two assists, junior
Brooke Kumnick matched her with five points on a pair of goals and game-best three assists, and senior tri-captain
Jessica Scannapieco chipped in a hat trick and an assist. Scannapieco also had six draw controls.
Wentworth was paced by Pam Mudge's three goals and a helper, while Jessica Houghton also registered a hat trick.
The Golden Bears wasted little time getting on the board as Scannapieco scored just 17 seconds into the contest. Stevens followed up to make it 2-0, 20 seconds later. Mudge gave the Leopards their first goal to make it 2-1 with 28 minutes and 32 seconds left.
Western New England would score 10 straight in a span of just under 11 minutes to take a commanding 12-1 lead. Senior
Emily Klag, Scialdone and Scannapieco each scored a pair of goals in the decisive run.
Mudge scored her second goal to ice the run at 7:37 to make the score 12-2. Stevens followed up with a score and senior Jessica Houghton ended the first half scoring with 39 seconds remaining to make it 13-3 at halftime.
Houghton started the second half scoring, however the Golden Bears followed up with three straight goals, including junior
Tori Cirocco scoring her 32nd goal of the year. Mudge, Houghton, and senior Alexandrea Banks each scored for three unanswered Leopard goals to make it 16-7. Scialdone scored the final goal of the game with 45 seconds remaining, sealing the 10-point win.
Banks had a goal, six ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Senior
Emily Castleman started the first half and made four saves to earn the win. Freshman goalie
Shannon McFadden played the second half and stopped four stops. Senior goalie Robyn Pacini made 14 saves in net for Wentworth.
After wrapping up its third-straight regular-season title, Western New England will host a CCC Semifinal game on Wednesday at Golden Bear Stadium. Start time to be determined.
