Juniors
Brooke Kumnick,
Taylor Scialdone paced the Golden Bears with two goals apiece. Senior tri-captain
Jessica Scannapieco added WNE's other tally and she had two draw controls to add to her NCAA all-Divisions record to 573.
Western New England coach Aimee Klepacki's club was making its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2007 and sixth in school history. Both teams lost to Williams College during the regular season, their only common opponent.
"I thought Catholic was very beatable, watching them on film and talking to Williams' coach," Klepacki said. "We just didn't come out on fire.
"All around," she added, "we just didn't play our best game."
Stumme paced the Cardinal scoring machine with four goals. Lindsay Brophy and Nicolettte Crisalli added three each, and Laura Dunn had four assists and a goal for a game-high five points. Four other players--Alexis Bosilovic, Madeline Wilson, Jenna Van Middleton and Ana Brandenburg--tallied two goals apiece.
The host Cardinals soared to a 9-0 lead in the first six minutes and 58 seconds by controlling play in all facets. Catholic was scorching from the opening draw, which WNE won but threw the ball away without taking a shot.
Crisalli got the scoring started 1:40 into the game when Landmark Tournament MVP Clair Schmitzer found her wide open on the left side. Brophy scored on a free position shot at the 27:21 mark to begin a four-goal barrage in the next 1:31. Crisalli's second tally, off a Dunn feed, made it 5-0 with 25:50 to go before the break.
Stumme collected a hat trick at 23:53 and added one for good measure seven-and-a-half minutes later to push the lead to 11-0. Van Middleton converted a pass from Emily Merkel with 15.3 seconds remaining to close the first-half scoring as Catholic led 16-0 at the intermission.
Kumnick scored the first two goals of the second half before CUA rang off four straight to make it 20-2. Scialdone's two goals at 7:37 and 1:00 and Scannapieco's one coming at 4:10 rounded out the Golden Bear scoring--held to a season low five goals this afternoon.
Western New England, winners of the Commonwealth Coast Conference for the first time, had won four straight and 12 of 13. Senior
Kaitlynn Stevens leads the nation in points with a single-season school record 133, but the Cardinals were able to keep her off the scoreboard--the only team to do so this spring.
The Cardinals' 22 goals matched their season high from last week's Landmark Championship game victory. The Cards had a 12-5 advantage on draw controls in the decisive first half and 18-11 overall.
