Golden Bears Fall 2-0 to WPI in NCAA Division III Opening Round Game at Williams College

Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.--Nina Murphy-Cook went a perfect 3-for-3, scored both runs, and stole a base while starting pitcher Claire Doolin tossed a complete game shutout in leading the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineers past the Western New England University Golden Bears, 2-0, in the 2015 NCAA Division III Softball Championship at the Williams College Regional on Cole Field on Friday afternoon.

Western New England (29-8 overall) will play MCLA--which lost to the host Ephs, 10-0 in five innings--at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game after seeing its season's best 10-game win streak snapped. The Engineers improve to 32-9 and will play Williams tomorrow at 11 a.m. If the Golden Bears defeat the Trailblazers, then they would play the loser of Williams/WPI later on Saturday at 4 p.m.

WPI struck first on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. Murphy-Cook reached on a leadoff bunt single to third base and advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ama Biney. Kristin Gall, the third batter in the frame, singled to right center to bring in Murphy. Katie Bumila followed with a single to put runners at first and second, but Western New England senior pitcher Lauren Zambrano got out of the jam by striking out RiAnna May and getting Hope Shevchuk to ground out to third base.

Seniors Avery Clark, Samantha Mulhern, Grace Kucharski and junior Heather Fecteau all had singles for the Golden Bears.

The Engineers added an insurance run, unearned, in the fifth when Biney singled up the middle to bring home Murphy, who had reached via a single and advanced to second base on an error by the left fielder.

Western New England's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the sixth inning. Clark hit a bloop single over second base to start it off, eventually getting to second on a wild pitch. The Golden Bears hit the ball hard but sophomore Corianna DeLisi flew out to the right fielder for the first out and Mulhern lined out to the left fielder. Doolin ended the threat on a called strikeout.

Both teams had scoring chances in the opening frame as WNE's Mulhern singled with one out and stole second, however was stranded as WPI's Doolin induced a pop-out and a groundout to escape. WPI's Murphy-Cook singled to lead off the bottom half of the first and quickly stole second, her nation-leading 52nd swipe of the season.  A fly out to right advanced her to third; however, she was stranded as Zambrano recorded a strikeout and infield fly to get out of the jam.

May walked to begin the second and following a pair of outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a walk to Kelsey Saucier, Jaclyn DiTroia then singled to center, however obstruction was called on May which negated a run and ended the inning.

The Golden Bears produced a one-out single in the seventh; however a pair of fly outs ended the game sending the Engineers into the winner's bracket game.

WPI outhit the Golden Bears 6-4 on the afternoon with Murphy-Cook the only player with multiple hits.

Zambrano went the distance in defeat tossing all six innings and allowing only one earned run with four strikeouts. Doolin yielded just the four hits and struck out four as well.
