Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Springfield College outshot host Western New England University 16 to 3 en route to a 3-0 field hockey victory Thursday at Golden Bear Stadium, snapping the Golden Bears' best start in 29 years. The crosstown Pride improve to 4-1 on the season while Western New England loses for the first time in four starts.
The loss to SC also snaps WNE's longest winning streak since the 2010 squad won five in a row to end October.
After 20 minutes, Amanda Nusbaum finally broke a scoreless tie by notching her second goal of the season on a rebound shot by Jamie Raccosta. The Golden Bears played feisty defense but it wasn't enough as Nusbaum's goal was all the Pride needed.
Sophomore Grace Trupe had a great effort in the cage racking up 10 saves for the game--one coming off of a penalty stroke which she blocked away with her left hand. She now moves to 3-1 for the season. Pride goalie Timarie Villa had one save and now owns a 4-1 mark, while recording her third shutout.
Kristina Krull and Maggie Kennedy also scored 5 minutes and 13 seconds apart for the Pride, who got the two insurance goals in the second half.
Western New England was kept at bay by an equally strong SC defense as the Golden Bears did not advance past the Pride's 40-yard line for the first 10 minutes to start the game. The Golden Bears had zero shots at halftime and did not get their first shot until the 48th minute, when sophomore Michelle Carlson's attempt when just wide of the right post.
Carlson finished with two shots and freshman Emily Antinozzi had WNE's other shot on the afternoon.
The Golden Bears will travel to Maine to take on the University of New England at 5 p.m. Saturday in a Commonwealth Coast Conference opener versus the defending CCC champion Nor'easters.
At 3-0, WNE was off to the program's best start since 1986, when the team opened the season 5-0-1.
