SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Wesleyan University scored a goal in each half to defeat Western New England University, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer play on Wednesday at Suprenant Field. The Cardinals improve to 3-2 on the season while the host Golden Bears slip to 3-5 overall.
Wesleyan outshot Western New England 20 to 8 and 7-5 on frame, while also dominating on corner kicks, 10-0. Junior keeper
Kevin Strobel tried to keep WNE close by making five saves which was equaled by his counterpart Jack Katkavich.
After Wesleyan kept possession in its offensive-third of the field with three straight corner kicks within a span of 3 minutes and 3 seconds, the Golden Bears applied some pressure of their own with the games first two shots on goal. Sophomore
Troy Remillard had two good looks from long distance but Katkavich stopped both attempts.
Brandon Sousa scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute. Off of a corner kick, Wesleyan sent a pass deep into the penalty area and after a failed clear by the Golden Bears Sousa stepped up to drill a right-footed blast into the upper right-corner of the net from about 25 yards out.
The Cardinals added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute when Max Jones also scored his first tally of 2015, curling a free kick around the WNE wall that was positioned at the top of the box and the shot was tucked inside the right post.
Remillard and classmate
Logan Pingree led WNE with three and two shots, respectively.
Western New England continues to alternate dates with Commonwealth Coast Conference opponents in its next outing on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy.
