Golden Bears Strike First in Maine but Forge 1-1 Draw Against Host Husson Eagles

Box Score BANGOR, Maine--Senior Emma Norden scored her first goal of the season and classmate Briana Kubik posted a season-best eight saves as Western New England earned a 1-1 double overtime tie with Husson on Saturday in the opening contest of the 11th annual Husson University Eagles Classic at Boucher Field. The Golden Bears are now 0-1-1 on the young year while the hosts were playing in their first game.

Western New England struck first in the 38th minute when Norden took a feed from junior Brooke Labrie and found the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage. Labrie notched her first career point on a nice touch pass to Norden in her second game in a Golden Bears uniform.

Kubik finished with eight stops as the Eagles outshot WNE 15 to 13 and 10-5 on goal.

The score would remain 1-0 until the 60th minute when Taylor Fortin scored off a corner kick from Leah Hibbard to tie the score at 1-all.

Both the Golden Bears and Eagles had scoring chances in overtime but couldn't close it out.

Husson goalkeeper Kayla Gordon made four saves in her first collegiate start.

Western New England will play Newbury College at 11 a.m. Sunday, and Husson hosts Saint Joseph's College of Maine at 1:30 p.m. to conclude the Classic.
