Chelsea Vujs (Berlin, Conn.) registered her second consecutive double-double and 32
nd of her career, leading the Western New England University women's basketball team to a comfortable 69-54 victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology this evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Vujs shot 9-of-13 from the field and 2-for-5 from the free-throw line en route to a 21-point effort, and the senior also recorded game-highs in rebounds (11) and steals (5) to go with two assists. Sophomore guard
Dorothy O'Neill (Staten Island, N.Y.) added ten points and four assists, while junior
Sammie Olson (Tolland, Conn.) turned in a solid all-around performance with five points, five rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
The Golden Bears held a significant advantage in bench points, outscoring the Leopards 25-2. Freshmen forwards
Aliyah Brito (Brockton, Mass.) and
Allison Mishol (Longmeadow, Mass.) led the Western New England reserves, combining for 16 points and seven rebounds.
Senior guard
Rachael Camara (Fall River, Mass.) paced Wentworth with a game-high 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, nine rebounds, four steals and one block. Senior
Carly Rogers (Scarborough, Maine) finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore
Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) chipped in with seven points and four boards.
Vujs came out of the gates firing, scoring nine of Western New England's first 11 points as the Golden Bears led by five (11-6) midway through the first quarter. Wentworth scored the next five points to tie the score, but a 10-2 Western New England run the rest of the way put the home team in front by eight (21-13) after ten minutes of play.
The Golden Bears extended their lead to 14 (29-15) on a layup by senior guard
Amanda Lopez (Windsor, Conn.) midway through the second quarter, and carried a ten-point advantage (35-25) into the locker room for halftime.
Vujs knocked down a jumper early in the third quarter and junior
Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) followed with a three-pointer on Western New England's next possession as the Golden Bears' lead reached 15 (40-25), but Wentworth continued to battle, cutting their deficit to eight (46-38) with 3:49 remaining in the third.
Western New England finally broke the game open midway through the fourth quarter, posting an 8-0 run that culminated in a triple by freshman
Meghan Gilhool (Montrose, Pa.) as the Golden Bears led by 20 (67-47) with just over three minutes left in the contest.
Western New England limited Wentworth to 31.4 percent (16-of-51) shooting for the game, while connecting on 47.5 percent (28-of-59) of its shots from the field. The Golden Bears also held the advantage in points in the paint (26-14) and points off turnovers (17-11).
Both Western New England (6-5, 3-1 CCC) and Wentworth (4-6, 1-3 CCC) will be back in action on Thursday night, as the Golden Bears head to Nichols College for a 7:30 p.m. contest and the Leopards return home to host Eastern Nazarene at 5:30 p.m.Â
