MILTON, Mass. (February 10, 2016) - Curry College utilized an 11-0 second half run to rally past Western New England University for a 59-50 victory this evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action at Katz Gymnasium.
Senior forward
Chelsea Vujs (Berlin, Conn.) led all players with 17 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block as the Golden Bears saw their four-game winning streak come to a close. Vujs, who shot 7-of-16 from the field and 3-of-6 from the free throw line, surpassed Eileen Monaghan '97 for ninth place on the program's all-time scoring list in the process.
Junior
Sammie Olson (Tolland, Conn.) finished with 14 points, just one shy of her career-high, while classmate
Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) rounded out Western New England's three double-figure scorers with 12 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Freshman guard
Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) paced the Colonels with a team-high 15 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals. Graduate student guard
Christina Deiorio (Stoughton, Mass.) finished with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, and senior
Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) added eight points to go with her 12 boards.
Curry, which trailed by two at halftime, tied the game early in the third quarter on a jumper by Irwin, before regaining the lead on a Griffith layup. Olson knocked down a three-pointer on Western New England's next possession to put the Golden Bears back in front by one (28-27), but that would be their final lead of the game.
Curry scored the next four points to claim a 31-28 edge, and after an Anderson layup midway through the period cut the margin to one, the Colonels posted an 11-0 run that culminated in a layup by junior
Alyssa Keeney (Coventry, Conn.) at the 7:15 mark of the fourth quarter. Western New England answered with a 5-0 run to pull back to within seven (44-37) with 5:24 to go but would get no closer, as Curry knocked down ten free throws over the final 2:32 to seal the win.
A low scoring first half saw the two teams turn in near identical shooting efforts, as Western New England went 8-for-23 (34.8%) from the field and Curry posted a 9-for-26 (34.6%) performance. Curry led by as many as four (13-9) following a layup by Irwin with 4:22 left in the opening quarter, but Vujs brought that margin back down to two with a jumper at the 1:17 mark.
Both teams struggled to score early in the second quarter, as Anderson's three-pointer just under three minutes in served as the first basket of the period and gave the Golden Bears a 14-13 edge. A quick 5-0 Curry run put the home team back in front by four (18-14), but layups by Olson and Vujs on Western New England's next two possessions evened the score at 18. The Golden Bears eventually took a two-point lead (25-23) into halftime as Olson connected from beyond the arc to cap the scoring with 2:13 remaining in the second quarter.
The Golden Bears shot 28.8 percent (17-of-59) from the field, including 26.7 percent (8-of-30) in the second half. Curry posted a 36.7 percent (22-of-60) shooting clip overall, going 12-of-27 (44.4%) over the final 20 minutes of action.
Western New England (13-9, 10-5 CCC) returns home to host Eastern Nazarene for Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, while Curry (10-12, 7-8 CCC) heads to Dudley, Mass. to take on Nichols.Â
