WARWICK, R.I. (April 1, 2016) - The Western New England University men's golf team opened its 2016 spring schedule today at the Rhode Island College Invitational, held at Valley Country Club in Warwick, R.I.

The Golden Bears sit in tenth place in the 16-team field after round one with a score of 325, ten strokes back of host Rhode Island College, which is leading the way after shooting a combined 315. Worcester State University (317) and UMass Dartmouth (318) are in second and third, respectively. Worcester State's Mike Jezierski tops the leader board with a three over par 75 after one round.

Junior
Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) paced the Golden Bears today, shooting an eight over par 80, placing him in a tie for 22
nd overall in the 80-player field. Sophomores
Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.) and
Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) are tied for 29
th after recording matching scores of 81, while classmate
John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) and junior
Joe DaSilva (Watertown, Conn.) rounded out Western New England's participants in 41
st (83) and 59
th (85), respectively.
