CRANSTON, R.I. (April 17, 2016) - Led by an impressive performance from sophomore
Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.), the Western New England University men's golf team finished in a tie for seventh place following round two action today at the Wildcats Spring Invitational, hosted by Johnson & Wales University at Cranston Country Club.

Metcalf posted the lowest round two score in the 100-player field, following up his 86 from yesterday with an even-par 72 today, and finishing in a five-way tie for tenth place with a combined score of 158. Jeff Piraino of Johnson & Wales was the only other player to record a 72 in round two.

Western New England posted a team score of 312, a 23-stroke improvement from yesterday's 335 that had the Golden Bears tied for tenth place following round one. Their two-day score of 647 was good for a tie for seventh place with Salem State and Husson in the 19-team field. Williams claimed the team title with a score of 630 (320 + 310), while Endicott and Rhode Island College tied for second (636). Jonathan Cooper of RIC claimed the top individual honors with a combined 149 (72 + 77). ÂÂ

Junior
Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore
Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.) finished in a five-way tie for 24
th with matching scores of 161. Fontaine, who shot a team-best 79 in round one, turned in an 82 today, while Ciolek fired a six-over 78 today after posting an 83 yesterday. ÂÂ

Rounding out Western New England's five entries were sophomore
John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) and junior
Joe DaSilva (Watertown, Conn.). Abbott finished in a tie for 67
th with a two-day score of 171 (91 + 80) after shaving 11 strokes off yesterday's effort, while DaSilva posted a combined score of 176 (87 + 89), good for a four-way tie for 75
th.

The Golden Bears will be back in action this Thursday, when they host their annual Western New England Invitational at Veterans Memorial Golf Course in Springfield, Mass.
