SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 21, 2016) - The Western New England University men's golf team posted its lowest score of the season on its way to capturing the WNE Invitational this afternoon at Veterans Memorial Golf Course in Springfield, Mass.

Joe DaSilva (Watertown, Conn.) and sophomore
John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) led the way for the Golden Bears, tying for medalist honors after shooting two-under par 70s on the 6,433-yard course.

The Western New England 'Blue' team compiled a score of 291, 14 strokes better than the second place finisher, Salem State, which turned in a 305. Endicott followed in third place (307), while Western New England's 'White' team and Nichols finished fourth (311) and fifth (313), respectively, in the ten-team field.

Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was the third Golden Bear to post a top-five performance, as he tied Endicott's Carter Knox for fourth place in the 53-player field with a one-over 73. Sophomore
Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) was able to secure a top-20 finish, as he tied for 17
th with a score of 78.

Nick Shemkovitz (Meriden, Conn.) and
Erik Laaksonen (Sandy Hook, Conn.) paced Western New England's 'White' team with matching scores of 76, good for a four-way tie for eighth place, while senior
Paul Murphy (Attleboro, Mass.) tied for 21
st with a 79.

Western New England will be back in action next Friday, when the Golden Bears host the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championship at Franconia Golf Course in Springfield.
