SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 30, 2016) - The Western New England University men's golf team rallied from a nine-stroke deficit following round one action yesterday to capture the program's second consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship this afternoon at Franconia Golf Course.

Western New England followed up Friday's score of 309 with a 295 today, edging Endicott by three strokes for the conference crown. The Golden Bears finished with a two-day total of 604, while the Gulls placed second (607), Nichols took third (620) and Roger Williams rounded out the four-team field with a score of 644. Endicott senior Austin Teal earned medalist honors for the second consecutive year at the CCC Championship with a two-round total of 147.

Western New England's comeback was fueled by juniors
Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and
Joe DaSilva (Watertown, Conn.) and sophomore
Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.), who all shot two-over par 73s in round two.

Fontaine, who fired a 77 yesterday, finished with a two-day score of 150, placing him in a three way tie for second place with Ciolek and Endicott sophomore Drew Benshoff. The junior was able to improve upon his round one score by four strokes with the help of three birdies today on the par-71, 6,213-yard course.

Ciolek, who earned his way into the tournament with a victory in a team qualifier on Thursday, posted an eagle on the par-4 ninth hole en route to his 73 today. ÂÂ

DaSilva finished one stroke back of Fontaine and Ciolek with a two-day total of 151, while sophomore
John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) posted a 76, one shot better than yesterday's effort for a combined score of 153, good for sixth place.

Rounding out Western New England's five entries was sophomore
Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.), who followed up his 79 from round one with a 77 today and finished tenth in the 20-player field with a two-day score of 156.

With their back-to-back CCC titles, the Golden Bears have now captured three conference crowns in program history, the first of which came in 2008. All three championships have come during the tenure of 29
th year head coach
Bill Downes.

Along with its CCC title, Western New England earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, which will be held Tuesday-Friday May 10-13 at Midvale Country Club and Mendon Golf Club in Rochester, N.Y.
