BEVERLY, Mass. (April 9, 2016) - The Western New England University women's lacrosse team rallied from a late three-goal deficit to force overtime before falling to Endicott College, 10-9, this afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Hempstead Stadium.
ÂÂ
Trailing 9-6 after freshman
Jackie Healy (Northborough, Mass.) scored for the Gulls with just over ten minutes remaining in regulation, senior
Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) fueled Western New England's comeback with three goals over the next six minutes, two of which were assisted by classmate
Brooke Kumnick (Granby, Conn.).
ÂÂ
Scialdone put two shots on goal in the extra session, including a free position attempt with 23 seconds left in the period, but both were stopped by Endicott sophomore goalie
Molly Lane (Durham, Maine). The Gulls secured the victory on their ensuing possession, as junior
Emily Whitney (Rye, N.H.) netted the game-winner with just six seconds on the clock.
ÂÂ
Kumnick paced Western New England (8-4, 2-2 CCC) with six points (four goals, two assists), while Scialdone added five (four goals, one assist) and sophomore
Julia Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.) chipped in with two assists.
ÂÂ
Senior
Megan Clune (Scotia, N.Y.) led the Golden Bear defense with team-highs in both ground balls (four) and caused turnovers (three), while sophomore goalie
Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) finished with 19 saves in the cage.
ÂÂ
Freshman
Ali Campbell (Lakeville, Mass.) and Whitney powered the Endicott (3-8, 2-1 CCC) attack, combining for nine points. Healy added three goals, and sophomore
Olivia Larson (Cheshire, Conn.) recorded nine draw controls as the Gulls held a 16-6 advantage in the category.
ÂÂ
Campbell opened the scoring 3:36 into the contest, and Endicott led 4-1 at the 16:22 mark of the first half after Healy found the back of the net on a feed from junior
Chelsea Burke (Georgetown, Mass.). ÂÂ
ÂÂ
Western New England answered with a 3-0 run, however, that featured freshman
Kristen Breen's (Ellington, Conn.) fifth goal of the season as well as two goals by Kumnick, to tie the score. Whitney put Endicott back in front just 22 seconds before halftime, scoring an unassisted goal to give the Gulls a 5-4 edge.
ÂÂ
After the home team extended the margin to two (6-4) early in the second half, Kumnick brought the Golden Bears back with goals at the 28:11 and 17:42 marks, respectively.
ÂÂ
The back-and-forth continued as Endicott utilized a 3-0 run over the next seven minutes to claim a 9-6 advantage, setting the stage for Western New England's late rally.
ÂÂ
Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday, as the Golden Bears are scheduled to host Nichols at 4 p.m. and Endicott hits the road for a 4:30 p.m. contest at Salve Regina.  ÂÂ
