Box Score Junior Alona Kornberg leads Western New England with ten kills
AMHERST, Mass. (September 14, 2016) – The Western New England University volleyball team had its six-match winning streak halted with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-19) setback to Amherst College this evening in non-conference action at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Top Performers
• Junior outside hitter Alona Kornberg (Fair Lawn, N.J.) led the Western New England offense with a team-high ten kills on a .200 hitting percentage.
• Junior Brianna Roath (Jackson, N.J.) paced the Golden Bear defense with a career-high 19 digs.
• Senior outside hitter Maggie Danner (Newport Beach, Calif.) led Amherst with a match-high 12 kills while posting a .360 hitting percentage.
• Senior setter Katie Bres (Houston, Tex.) dished out 16 assists and added ten digs on the defensive end for the only double-double of the contest.
Match Review
• Western New England led 9-7 early in the opening set following a kill by Kornberg, but Amherst answered with four straight points to go up 11-9 and didn't trail the rest of the frame. The Golden Bears tied the score at 14 and kept it close until the end, but they were unable to close the gap as the home team claimed a 1-0 lead in the match.
• Amherst opened up a quick 4-1 lead early in the second set and eventually stretched their cushion to 12 (14-2) with a 10-0 run. Western New England was unable to get closer than ten for the remainder of the frame, falling into a 2-0 hole.
• The Golden Bears again faced an early deficit in the third set, as they trailed 4-0 before reeling off four straight points. Western New England eventually pulled ahead midway through the frame (14-13) and the score was tied at 18 following a kill by junior outside hitter Emmaline Chiodini (Saint Louis, Mo.). Danner gave Amherst the lead back with a kill, however, sparking a 7-1 run to close out the set as the home team completed the sweep.
Notes
• Roath established a new career-high for digs, surpassing her previous best total of 15, which was set last September 16 against Amherst.
• Kornberg's ten-kill performance was her fourth double-digit kill effort this season and third in the last four matches.
• The Golden Bears posted a .231 hitting percentage in the third set and made just three attack errors after committing 19 over the first two frames combined.
