Box Score Western New England extends winning streak to nine games, improves to 6-0 in CCC play
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 7, 2017) – The Western New England University women's basketball team kept its perfect Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) record intact and extended its winning streak to nine games with a 73-47 victory over rival Endicott College this afternoon at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Top Performers
• Senior forward Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) fueled the Western New England offense with a game-high 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line to go with six rebounds.
• Senior forward Paige Young (Berlin, Conn.) finished with six points, a game-high nine rebounds and three assists.
• Junior guard Dorothy O'Neill (Staten Island, N.Y.) totaled 11 points, three rebounds and three assists.
• Senior forward Sarah Hood (Burlington, Mass.) led the Gulls with 15 points and six rebounds, while junior guard Hannah Kiernan (Wenham, Mass.) added 11 points, five boards and two assists.
Game Review
• Endicott scored the first two points of the game, but Western New England responded with a 16-4 run that featured 11 points from Anderson. The Golden Bears limited the Gulls to 2-of-16 shooting (12.5%) in the first quarter and led 21-7 after ten minutes of play.
• Consecutive layups by senior guard Sammie Battaini (Leominster, Mass.) to start the second quarter extended Western New England's advantage to 18, and the lead reached 21 (30-9) after a pair of free throws by Anderson at the 6:15 mark.
• Endicott closed out the final 3:35 of the half on an 8-4 run to pull to within 17 (36-19) at the break.
• Anderson connected from beyond the arc at the 7:14 mark of the third quarter to make it a 21-point game (44-23), and Western New England led by 23 (56-33) at the end of the frame.
• The Gulls used an 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to 15 (56-41), but they would get no closer. Western New England answered with a 10-0 run to extend its lead back to 25 before going on to win by 26.
Notes
• Western New England shot 45.5% (25-of-55) from the field, 55.6% (5-of-9) from beyond the arc, and 75% (18-of-24) from the free throw line.
• The stifling Golden Bear defense limited Endicott to 28.6% (18-of-63) shooting overall and did not allow the Gulls to make a single three-point field goal (0-of-14). Western New England also held a 42-32 rebounding advantage.
• Western New England's nine-game winning streak matches its longest since the 2005-06 season, head coach Nicole Chaszar's first with the Golden Bears.
• Western New England's 26-point victory marks its fourth consecutive 20+ point win, six in the last seven games, and seventh overall this season.
