Golden Bears Fall to Roger Williams in CCC Quarterfinals, 5-0

BRISTOL, R.I. (October 11, 2017) – The sixth-seeded Western New England University women's tennis team was defeated by third-seeded Roger Williams University, 5-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, Roger Williams (11-3) advances to the CCC semifinals, where the Hawks will take on Endicott College. Western New England's season comes to a close at 4-7.

Match Review
• The Hawks were victorious at all three doubles flights, opening up a 3-0 lead in the match. Kathryn Hughes and Julia Akerman defeated sophomore Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and senior Christina D'Agostino (Bohemia, N.Y.) 8-1 at No. 1, while Roger Williams' No. 2 duo of Gabrielle Riley and Heidi Martin topped junior Petra Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) and freshman Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) 8-2 at No. 2. Senior Kim Phu (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and sophomore Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) fell to Ali Stankiewicz and Allie Grinavic by the same score at No. 3.
• In singles action, Hughes won a 6-0, 6-0 decision over LaPress at No. 1, and Riley posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over freshman Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) at No. 6.
• Schrader won the first set over Akerman, 6-3, at No. 2, but the match went unfinished as the contest was played to decision.
