First Half Effort Fuels WestConn's 3-1 Win over Women's Soccer

Box Score

Vitka scores in third consecutive game for Golden Bears

DANBURY, Conn. (September 14, 2019) – The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team built a 2-0 first half lead on its way to a 3-1 win over Western New England University on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Top Performers
Western New England sophomore forward Samantha Vitka (Stratford, Conn.) continued her scoring surge with a goal in her third consecutive contest. Senior goalkeeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) made nine saves in the setback.

WestConn was led by freshman midfielder Myah Croze (Bristol, Conn.), who tallied a pair of goals for the home side.

Game Review
Just over ten minutes into the contest, sophomore Kaleigh Panek (Shelton, Conn.) got the Colonels on the board with an unassisted strike.

After Croze buried the first of her two goals in the 33rd minute, WestConn took a 2-0 advantage into the intermission.

At the 60:17 mark, Vitka pulled the Golden Bears back to within a goal when she found the back of the net to make it 2-1.

That would be as close as Western New England got, however, as Croze notched an insurance tally with under ten minutes to play to restore WestConn's two-score cushion.

Notes

• Vitka leads the Golden Bears with three goals this season.
• The Colonels outshot Western New England 20-12, with a 12-4 advantage in shots on target.
