Bruehwiler's Lone Tally Brings Golden Bears to Victory over Suffolk

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 2, 2021) – The Western New England University women's soccer team took care of the visiting Suffolk University Rams on Saturday afternoon from Suprenant Field, beating the Rams 1-0 on an early tally from Allison Bruehwiler to give the Golden Bears their second win of the conference season.

 Records:

  • Western New England: 6-4 (2-1 CCC)
  • Suffolk University: 6-3 (1-2 CCC)

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears got on the board early off a breakaway goal from senior Allison Bruehwiler. Bruehwiler was able to streak into the box alone as she got past the Rams defense and made a move on the Rams goalkeeper Allison Rodrigues, and slotted the ball into the lower right part of the net to give Western New England the 1-0 lead. Bruehwiler slots in her fourth goal of the season for Western New England.

The Golden Bears would play even soccer with the Rams for the remainder of the second half, though Western New England would find the better of the play. The Golden Bears took 11 shots towards goal in the first half, to the Rams two. Allison Rodrigues came away with seven first half saves for the Rams on eight attempts. GK Molly McLaughlin stopped both shots she faced in the opening 45 minutes of play. The Golden Bears attempted three corner kicks in the opening half while Suffolk earned just one.

The second half of play turned more towards the Rams, as they had their scoring chances in an attempt to get back into the game. The backline of defense stood tall for the Golden Bears, denying the Rams chances to get back in the contest. Suffolk put together just one shot on goal in the second half as Nicole Morin-Trotta would be the only player to take a shot on goal in the half for the Rams. Morin-Trotta would be denied by McLaughlin to keep the Rams off the scoreboard. The Golden Bears would keep possession of the ball for the final three minutes of the game to take down the Suffolk Rams 1-0. Western New England earns their third shutout of the season, and second consecutive shutout on conference play.
