Balanced Offense Helps WNE Take Care of Fitchburg State

Springfield, Mass. (September 11, 2021)- The Western New England women's soccer team saw five different goal scorers and peppered 26 shots on goal on the afternoon en route to a 5-0 win over Fitchburg State University on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears pick up their first win of the season at Supernant Field. 

Records:

  • Fitchburg State: 0-3

How it Happened:

Western New England did not waste a moment to get their offense started against Fitchburg State as Falcons GK Allison Gough was tested early and often. The Golden Bears would tally their first goal just seven minutes into the contest on a through ball from Allison Burehwiler that found the foot of Isabella Montalvo, who took one dribble and sent the ball into the lower left corner of the net, giving Western New England the early 1-0 advantage. The Golden Bears first goal was not the only shot of the half, as Western New England took 21 first half shots, with 15 going on goal. 

WNE would grab another tally late in the first half with the clock winding down as Emily Chojnicki sent a through ball, finding the foot of Lindsay Reidy, who took a booming kick just under the bar and into the cage, scoring the Golden Bears second goal of the half. WNE would take the two-goal lead into the break, out shooting Fitchburg State 21-1 in the first 45 minutes. WNE would take six corner kicks, while Fitchburg was only able to muster one. GK Molly McLaughlin came away with one save on one attempt by the Falcons. 

The Golden Bears would continue their offense in the second half, putting on a dominant show in front of the home crowd. Senior Allison Bruehwiler started off the second half by scoring the third WNE goal of the afternoon. Autumn Hathaway sent a through ball towards Bruehwiler, who then slid the ball into the low left portion of the net, giving WNE the three-goal lead. Just eight minutes after the Bruehwiler tally, Western New England would score goal number four of the afternoon. After the ball was sent into the box, the Falcons deflected it down, right to the foot of Samantha Vitka, who fires a shot passed the giving Allison Gough to give WNE the 4-0 lead. 

The Golden Bears would tack on one final goal in the 61st minute of the contest when Danielle McCarthy would find a loose ball inside the box and take a shot towards the bottom left corner of the net, tallying the fifth and final goal of the afternoon for Western New England. The Golden Bears out shot the Falcons 40-4 in the game, with 26 shots going towards goal. In the final 45 minutes of the game, it was Brianna Carroll tending twine for the Golden Bears. Carroll came up with two saves in the half, to hold Fitchburg State at bey and preserve the shutout victory for Western New England, 5-0. 

Inside the Lines:

  • The Golden Bears saw five different goal scorers on the afternoon with Isabella Montalvo, Lindsay Reidy, Allison Bruehwiler, Samantha Vitka, and Danielle McCarthy all tallying their first goals of the season. 
  • The Golden Bears took 26 shots on target, while the duo of Allison Gough, who played the first 73 minutes of the contest, and Abaigeal Gilman, who played the final 17 minutes, came away with 21 saves for Fitchburg State. WNE's duo of Molly McLaughlin and Brianna Carroll came up with three saves combined. 
  • WNE took ten corner kicks on the afternoon, tallying 36 this season. Fitchburg State came away with just one corner kick. 
  • WNE dominated the possession time, with the Golden Bears carrying the ball for nearly 60% of the game.

  • WNE will turn around in 24 hours to take on Springfield College from Supernant Field on Sunday, September 12 at 1:00 pm. 
  • Fitchburg State will stay on the road as they travel to Nichols College on Tuesday, September 14 at 3:00 pm.
