Women's Ice Hockey Shuts Out AMCATs, Pick Up 2-0 Start to Season

Box Score

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 29, 2022) – The Western New England women's ice hockey team did not allow a goal on Saturday evening, coming away with a 3-0 win, their second of the season, beating the Anna Maria College AMCATs from the Olympia Ice Center.

Records:

  • Western New England: 2-0-0
  • Anna Maria: 0-2-0

How it Happened:
Western New England started play with a quick shot by Alyssa Murphy that was saved by Sam Dahill, goalkeeper for Anna Maria. WNE would keep the pressure on the AMCATs for much of the contest as Brie Dube would shoot two quick shots on goal that were both denied. Western New England would obtain much of the offensive attack within the first 20 minutes of play, outshooting Anna Maria 15-10. GK Rieley Jessie-Gerelli made ten saves for the Golden Bears in her season debut.

WNE would get on the board for the first time at the 5:45 mark of the second period when Maddie Pope dangled her way to the middle of the ice before finding an oncoming Brie Dube, who slotted the puck past the Anna Maria goalkeeper and into the net to give Western New England a 1-0 lead. Alyssa Murphy would pick up the secondary assist on the goal. The Golden Bears would maintain total attack of the offensive zone and would be rewarded after drawing a penalty on the AMCATs. WNE would take advantage of that penalty when Abby Hay slotted home her first goal of the season on assists from Kelly Yorkey and Alexa Paoli to give WNE a quick 2-0 lead with five minutes to play in the second period.

WNE would outshoot Anna Maria 14-6 in the second period with Jessie-Gerelli coming away with all six stops in the period.

Good puck movement from the Golden Bears would result in their third goal of the contest when Alyssa Murphy delivered a pass to the point to Maggie Holt who wound up for a wrist shot that was sent intentionally wide for a rebound chance for Allison Walker, who dumped in her first goal of the season, giving Western New England a 3-0 lead. The Golden Bears would hold Anna Maria to a season low three shots in the third period, coming away with a 3-0 win over the AMCATs.

Inside the Crease:

  • Three different goal scorers for WNE would pave the way to victory as Brie Dube, Abby Hay, and Allison Walker all scored their first goals of 2022-2023.

  • With an assist, Maggie Holt picks up her second assist of the season.
