- University of New England: 1-6-4 (0-1-2)
How it Happened:
The Golden Bears were led into the game by Braylon Casinghino in net, and on the other side of the pitch was Triston O'Hagan in net for the Nor'Easters. The game got started quickly with a Roger Leland opening-minute goal. Malik Serriser sent a lofted ball over the heads of the Nor'Easter defense to a diving Roger Leland. Leland sent a header shot over the hand of the UNE keeper, and the Golden Bears had a very early 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears went right back to work after the goal, leading to Leland again having a shot at goal; however, it went off the crossbar. Mike Riley and Mike Milazzo would follow that up with shots that were off-target. Then, Conor Lynch got the Nor'Easters on the shot chart with a shot that Casinghino had to make a save on. Shay O'Neill countered for the Golden Bears. However, the ball would sail high and wide left. Jayden Montagna would follow with a shot that made O'Hagan save. Then, Milazzo would have a shot that would not make it to the net. The Golden Bears kept the pressure on the Nor'Easters. Milazzo had another shot, and multiple corner kicks were given to the Golden Bears. That was until the 29th minute when Luke Gould made Casinghino make a save on a shot to the right side of the net. That was answered by two Golden Bear shots. One from AJ Quiterio and one from Serriser. O'Hagan made saves on both shots and kept the deficit at one. Nick Reffel had a shot in the 32nd minute for the Nor'Easters. However, it did not make it to the net. Matthew Dewhurst had the final shot on goal for the first half for both sides. Casinghino made the save and kept the score at 1-0 before the Golden Bears ended the first half with a flurry of corner kicks. At the break, the Golden Bears led in shots (10-4), shots on goal (4-3), corner kicks (7-1), and fouls (9-1). Both keepers made three saves each. WNE took the 1-0 lead into halftime and looked to extend in the second half.
They were looking to extend the lead coming out of the break and extend the lead they did. In the 52nd minute, the Nor'Easters were called for a penalty inside the 18-yard box. The Golden Bears were given the penalty kick. Mike Milazzo took the penalty kick and sent it to the right of the keeper. O'Hagan dove that way and made the initial save, but the ball went back to Milazzo, who struck the rebounded ball back toward the left side of the net and under the diving keeper. The lead was pushed to 2-0, Golden Bears. The Golden Bears kept their foot on the gas with a shot from Matt Spruill a minute later. O'Hagan made the save. Montagna then missed the net with a shot in the 55th minute.
Jake Thibodeau had a shot on net in the 64th minute. O'Hagan was there for the save. AJ Quiterio would hit the left post of the goal in the 68th minute, just missing the opportunity to triple the lead for the Golden Bears. That was followed by four more WNE shots. One was from Montagna and made O'Hagan make the save to keep the score at 2-0. The ball would move around the pitch for a while, and neither team would have a big opportunity for a little while. As the game neared its conclusion, O'Neill had a shot that did not reach the net. Carlson Rose had one, as well. However, it traveled wide right of the net. The Nor'Easters had a corner kick within the final three minutes of play. However, that opportunity was denied by the Golden Bears, and the game ended. The final stat line showed the Golden Bears won the shot battle 23-4, not letting up a shot in the second half. They had nine total shots on goal. Casinghino made three saves, and O'Hagan made seven. WNE had eight corner kicks compared to UNE, who had two. WNE finished with 17 fouls, and UNE finished with six. The Golden Bears won the game by a score of 2-0.
