Springfield, Mass. (November 16, 2023) - The Golden Bears, coming off their 1-0 overtime win against No. 15 Endicott College, welcomed the Curry College Colonels to the Olympia Ice Center. Emily Bisbee got the first goal of the game for Curry in the second period. Alyssa Murphy answered with a goal in the third period. The game would go to overtime and a shootout. Grayson Goolgasian and Hannah Berkowitz scored for Curry in the shootout, and Curry won.

How it Happened:
Goalies Rieley Jessie-Gerelli and Soleil Archambeault led the Golden Bears and Colonels onto the ice, respectively. The game started with a Hannah Berkowitz faceoff win for the Colonels. The Golden Bears put pressure on the Colonels early by having eight out of the first ten shots. Archambeault would make every save possible. After that, both teams would go back and forth with shots. The Golden Bears would be called for a penalty with 6:48 left in the opening period, and Curry would go on the power play. The Colonels had seven total shots during the power play. They had four shots on goal, which Jessie-Gerelli made each save on. The Golden Bears would finish the period with four of the final six shots of the first period but no goal. The first period ended with the score knotted at zero. Both teams had eight shots on goal during the period. The Golden Bears had more total shots by a score of 18-15. WNE had one penalty, which gave the Colonels the sole power play of the first period.
The second period started with another Berkowitz faceoff win. Both teams had a couple of shots to start the second period. The Golden Bears would go on the power play 4:42 into the second period. WNE had five shots during the power play, and all of them were on goal. Archambeault made each save and kept the game tied at zero. However, Curry would answer with eight straight shots, and then after some back-and-forth play from the teams, the Colonels would strike with the first goal of the game with 6:50 left in the period. The Colonels would get a couple of shots on Jessie-Gerelli and would swarm the net. The puck would find Emily Bisbee, who netted the goal. Danielle Reid and Margot Oxman were credited with the assists. Allison Walker would win the ensuing faceoff, and the Golden Bears were on the hunt for the equalizer. The Golden Bears had six of the final eight shots of the second period. However, they were not able to get that equalizing goal and went into the second intermission down 1-0. The Golden Bears had 13 shots on goal during the second period. The Colonels had eight. The Golden Bears had 18 total shots again, and the Colonels had 16. Both teams were now at one power play per side.
Berkowitz would win the faceoff to start the third period. However, the Golden Bears quickly had two shots that Archambeault had to save. Then, the Golden Bears were called for a penalty, and the Colonels would go on the power play. The Colonels would only get two shots off during the power play. However, the Golden Bears got a shorthanded shot off, as well. 3:34 into the third period, the Golden Bears got the answer to the Colonels' goal. A faceoff win from Maddie Pope led to Maddie Tucker sending the puck down behind the net. Emma Birmingham corralled the puck and sent it to Alyssa Murphy, who was waiting in front of the net. Murphy got the pass and sent the puck past the goalie to tie up the game at one per side. Soon after the goal was scored, Curry went back on the power play. The Colonels had six shots during the power play, with four shots testing Jessie-Gerelli, who made each save. Seven seconds later, the Golden Bears were on the power play. The Golden Bears had five shots on their power play, with one shot reaching Archambeault. Archambeault was able to save it and keep the game level at one. Nine minutes into the third period, the Golden Bears were back on the penalty kill. The Colonels had two shots during the power play, and the Golden Bears had two shorthanded shots, as well. Jessie-Gerelli was tested once, and Archambeault was tested twice. Both goalies made the saves.
After a few more shots from both teams, the Colonels returned to the power play with 5:52 left in the third period. The Colonels got two shots off before the power play ended, and the Colonels were called for a penalty right after the conclusion of their power play. The Golden Bears would only have one power play shot before it ended. Archambeault made the save. The Golden Bears would finish out the third period with three of the final five shots on goal. The goalies for both teams made the final five saves, and the teams were headed to overtime. The Golden Bears finished regular time with 34 shots on goal, with Archambeault making 33 saves against the Golden Bears. The Colonels got 26 shots on goal against Jessie-Gerelli, who made 25 saves. Total shots favored the Golden Bears 56-47, and the Golden Bears had five total penalties in regular time compared to the three from the Colonels.
Maddie Pope won the opening faceoff for the overtime period. Maggie Holt had a shot for the Golden Bears saved by Archambeault. Ella Altiman then had a shot for the Colonels, but Alexa Paoli blocked the puck before it could get to Jessie-Gerelli. Altiman followed that up with a shot on goal that Jessie-Gerelli saved. That was followed by Berkowitz having a shot blocked by Maggie Holt. The Colonels kept the pressure up. Megan Sawatzky had a shot that Jessie-Gerelli had to save. The Golden Bears then went on the power play. Murphy and Holt had shots saved by Archambeault. Then, Holt had a shot go wide of the net. Murphy had the final shot of the period, but it went wide, and the game would go to a shootout. The Golden Bears outshot the Colonels 5-4 and 3-2 in shots on goal.
In the shootout, Jessie-Gerelli saved a shot from Julia Small. Then, Archambeault would make a save on Maddie Pope. Hannah Berkowitz would score as the second penalty shot-taker for the Colonels. Alyssa Murphy was next for the Golden Bears but would miss, and the Golden Bears were down 1-0 after two shots from each team. Curry's captain, Grayson Goolgasian, was the next to go and would sneak the puck into the back of the net to give the Colonels the win 2-0 in overtime.
