Wolves, Golden Bears Draw 2-2 After Two Late Goals by the Wolves

Danbury, Conn. (September 19, 2023) - WNE went on the road to Danbury, Connecticut, for a matchup with the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University. The Golden Bears got off to a 2-0 start, but after conceding two goals late in the game, they ended the game in a 2-2 draw.

How it Happened:

Braylon Casinghino was back in net for the Golden Bears. Zachary Benson was in net on the other end of the pitch for the Wolves. The game started, and the teams moved the ball back and forth between each other. Both teams tried to gain their footing early. However, it was not until Mike Milazzo sent a header that went directly into the crossbar that anyone had taken a shot. After that shot in the 9th minute, the Golden Bears started to gain confidence, leading to an AJ Quiterio shot that was blocked in the 12th minute. Both teams battled back and forth, with some fouls being taken by both teams. The 28th minute saw the Golden Bears break the scoreless tie.

Malik Serisser was taken down on the left side of the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick for the Golden Bears. Mike Milazzo ran up and calmly sent the ball into the back of the net to give the Golden Bears the 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears got a spark from the goal and kept trying for another. Jonny Clough went for goal next, but it went wide of the net. The 31st and 35th minutes saw Damian Reyes and Maximus Vigo send shots wide of the net for the Wolves. Then, in the 37th minute, the Golden Bears doubled their lead. Serisser crossed the ball into the penalty area. Jayden Montagna pushed the ball to Shay O'Neill, who slid the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.

The Golden Bears were in the lead 2-0. Matthew Silva would then enter at goalie for the Wolves. The Wolves would see an opportunity at the end of the first half. George Cortez sent a header shot toward the net, but Casinghino scooped up the ball for the save. The Golden Bears went into the break up 2-0. After one half of play, the Golden Bears led the Wolves in shots (5-3), shots on goal (2-1), saves (1-0), and fouls (9-5). The Wolves attempted two corner kicks to the Golden Bears' one. 

After the halftime break, the Wolves were motivated to get a goal back quickly. Kadin Talho sent a header shot toward the net, but Casinghino kept it out of the back of the net. Then, George Cortez headed a shot at Casinghino, which was saved. Nikolas Chevres had a shot blocked in the 52nd minute of play. Chance Campbell then had a header shot blocked. The Wolves kept sending shots at the Golden Bear defense and goalkeeper. Gustavo Medina also had a shot, but it went high of the net. The 56th minute saw a shot by Jeffrey Norales go wide of the net. In the 59th minute, the Golden Bears got started with a shot from Matt Spruill. Silva had to make a save to keep the Wolves only down by two. Brennan Johnson was the next player to get a shot off. Johnson sent a shot at the Husky goal, but wide.

Jacob Burdick then sent a shot wide of the Golden Bear net. The teams kept going back and forth. Serisser had a shot go high of the net for the Golden Bears in the 72nd minute. That was followed by Emmanuel Fasusi sending a header shot at Braylon Casinghino. Casinghino made the save, and the score stayed 2-0 in favor of the Golden Bears. Enzo LaGrassa-Gillet would then shoot the ball wide of the net for the Wolves. Filipe Dutra sent a header shot at Casinghino, and Casinghino was able to make another save. After a shot from Filipe Dutra went wide of the Golden Bear net, and a shot from Jonny Clough went wide of the Husky net, Kadin Talho found the back of the net for the Wolves to cut the Golden Bear lead to 2-1.

Kent Eannarino passed the ball to Talho, who sent a long shot on the ground, and it found the back of the Golden Bear net with under six minutes to play in the game. In the 88th minute, the Wolves would get the second goal back and tie up the game at two goals a piece. Talho had a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Talho ran up and sent a hard shot around the WNE wall and past Casinghino to tie the game. Quiterio tried a shot in the 89th minute, but it was blocked. Then, Knut Lundstrom would try to send the ball past Silva, but Silva made the save. The game would end soon after that. The final statistics showed the Wolves ahead in shots (16-11), shots on goal (7-4), and corner kicks (6-2). The Golden Bears led in saves (5-2) and fouls (16-10). The Golden Bears and Wolves ended the game tied, 2-2.

  • Mike Milazzo scored the first goal in the 28th minute from the penalty spot to make the score 1-0.
