SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 3, 2023) – The Western New England field hockey team took down the crosstown rival Pride of Springfield College on the road Sunday afternoon after four different goal scorers would light the lamp for the blue and gold, sending WNE to a 4-1 victory.

How it Happened:
Western New England got off to a quick start, not allowing any offense to the Pride in the opening 15 minutes. The Golden Bears would find the back of the net in the first quarter with just 45 seconds remaining in the quarter when
Olivia Eastman found
Olyvia Whyte, who was able to tap the ball past SC goalkeeper Remy Niland, giving the visitors the early 1-0 advantage. Western New England out shot the Pride 6-0 in the opening frame.
The home team would turn the tables on Western New England in the second quarter when all four shots of the quarter came by the Pride. Springfield would get their first goal of the 2023 season when Hailey Gaydos found the back of the net, evening the score at one. Sophomore goalkeeper
Ella Henry made one save in the second quarter.
The Golden Bears would grab their second goal of the game in the third quarter when
Amanda Burns buried her second collegiate goal of her career, giving WNE the 2-1 edge.
Burns would find a loose ball in the slot that gave the blue and gold the lead. Burns would tally the only shot in the quarter for WNE while Springfield would take two shots, both on goal, both saved by
Henry.
WNE needed just 39 seconds to find the back of the net in the fourth quarter when
Sarah Johnston dribbled pasta a Springfield College defender and bounced a shot past the Pride goalkeeper and rolled just over the line and into the net to get WNE the two goal edge.
Johnston collected her first point of the season on the goal.
Less than a minute later, Western New England was back on the scoreboard as

Sarah Johnston for the fourth goal of the game for the Golden Bears, as WNE took a 4-1 lead. Down the stretch the WNE defense would need to withstand the pressure of the Pride as
Ella Henry made two saves in the final eight minutes of the game to preserve the win for the Golden Bears, who start the season 2-0 for the second straight season.
