Golden Bears Fall to the Blazers in Their First Meet of 2024

Springfield, Mass. (January 14, 2024) – The Golden Bears hosted the Blazers of Elms College in their first meet since the calendar switched to 2024. Megan Morissey picked up a first-place finish for the Golden Bears in the 50-yard Freestyle race. Olivia Emmanuel and Gianna Calabrese would earn personal best times in the 100-yard Butterfly and 500-yard Freestyle races, respectively.

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears welcomed the Elms College Blazers to campus for a Sunday morning meet. The meet got started with the 200-yard Medley Relay. Elms College would win the race with a final time of 2:11.91. The WNE team of Alexa Adams, Gianna Calabrese, Olivia Emanuele, and Megan Morissey would finish in second place with a time of 2:19.08. The 1000-yard Freestyle and 50-yard Backstroke races saw only Elms College swimmers in the race. Then was the 50-yard Breaststroke race. Gianna Calabrese finished in second place for the Golden Bears with a time of 43.04. Next, the 100-yard Butterfly saw Olivia Emanuele get second place for the Golden Bears, with a personal best time for the season of 1:07.44. That was a season-best time by 0.45 seconds.

Event number seven was the 50-yard Freestyle race. Megan Morissey swam a time of 29.77 and earned a first-place finish. Alexa Adams also swam the race and finished in fourth place with a time of 30.28. Megan Morissey would dive back in for the 100-yard Freestyle race. Morissey got third place with a time of 1:05.99. After not having a swimmer in the 100-yard Backstroke, the Golden Bears had two swimmers in the 500-yard Freestyle race. Olivia Emanuele finished in second place for WNE, and Gianna Calabrese finished in fourth place. Emanuele finished with a time of 6:10.43, and Gianna Calabrese would get a personal best time for the season of 7:10.92. That was a season-best time by 2.72 seconds. Event twelve was the 50-yard Butterfly race. Alexa Adams competed for the Golden Bears and earned second place with a time of 32.52. WNE did not compete in the 100-yard IM. However, they were in the final race of the day, the 200-yard Freestyle relay. The relay team of Alexa Adams, Gianna Calabrese, Megan Morissey, and Olivia Emanuele got second place and finished with a time of 2:05.69. The meet ended with the Blazers defeating the Golden Bears by a score of 134-40.

The Golden Bears have their next meet on Saturday, January 20, and Sunday, January 21. The team will compete in the Seven Sisters Invitational, hosted by Mount Holyoke College.
