SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 22, 2024) – Western New England women's basketball junior
Shaina Cooney picks up her first recognition from the Commonwealth Coast Conference of the season, earning Co-Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Cooney opened the week at Gordon College, coming away with 11 points in 16 minutes played, shooting 5/10 from the field. The Montgomery, New York, native snatched five rebounds, two assists, and a steal to guide the Golden Bears to a 54-44 victory over the Fighting Scots.
The Western New England junior followed up that performance by garnering her fourth double-double of the season in a close 54-52 victory over the University of New England in CCC play.
Cooney dropped ten points on 5/8 shooting, grabbing 11 rebounds in the win while picking up one assist in the win to help lead the Golden Bears to their first regular season sweep of the Nor'easters in four years, avenging two overtime losses last season.
On the season,
Cooney has averaged 11.6 points per game, shooting 50% from the field.
Cooney has snatched 108 rebounds, averaging 7.2 rebounds per game, while recording five blocks and seven steals.
The Golden Bears are back in action on Tuesday, January 23 at 5:30 p.m., welcoming Roger Williams University to the Alumni Healthful Living Center for a Commonwealth Coast Conference battle.
