Boston, Mass. (October 16, 2024) – WNE was in Boston, Massachusetts, on Wednesday for a showdown with Suffolk University. After a scoreless first half, Taj Jensen would net the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute off an assist from Jack Phelps to lead the Rams to a 1-0 victory over the Golden Bears.

Records:

  • Western New England: 6-7-3 (2-2-1)
  • Suffolk University: 7-5-3 (4-0-1)

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears started Ty Bevan in net for the first time this season. The Rams had Nathan Harlow in net for the conference clash with WNE. The Rams earned the first major opportunity with a shot blocked out of bounds for a corner kick in the 3rd minute. The Golden Bears stifled that chance and took the ball down the field for two shots. One in the 3rd and one in the 4th minute. Keegan Reim had a shot saved by Harlow, and then the next shot from WNE was sent wide of the goal. Those were the only shots for the Golden Bears in the first half. The Rams had the rest of the opportunities in the first half. Jack Phelps and Damon Smargon had shots saved by Bevan later in the first ten minutes of play. They had a corner kick lead to a header shot from Phelps. Bevan saved it in the 9th minute.

The Rams had eight more shots after that. They had one go wide, then a corner kick. They had another shot blocked, which led to a shot from Phelps, which Bevan saved. They had two more shots go wide after that, and another shot was blocked by the WNE defense in the 31st minute. Their final two shots of the half, in the 32nd and 38th minutes, were sent over the goal and did not test Bevan in net. Both teams had a corner kick opportunity during this time. However, neither team was able to capitalize with a shot on goal during those opportunities. The teams traded the ball for the final minutes of the half, and the first half ended with the score still 0-0. The first-half stats saw the Rams leading in shots 12-2, shots on goal 4-1, corner kicks 3-1, and fouls 6-4. The Golden Bears had more saves, 4-1.

The second half began with a quick shot from the Rams just forty-five seconds into the half. However, it went wide of the goal. The Golden Bears answered with a shot wide of the goal in the 48th minute. Then, in the 52nd minute, the Suffolk pressure earned them the game's first goal. After a Golden Bear attempt to clear, Ford Lee sent the ball to Jack Phelps, who immediately sent a pass to Taj Jensen, who moved the ball slightly and sent a right-footed shot curling into the bottom left corner of the net from outside the WNE penalty box. The Rams led 1-0. The Golden Bears answered with pressure. Two shots were blocked by the Suffolk defense. Then, Suffolk's Francisco Valck had an opportunity and hit the crossbar in the 57th minute. The teams traded possession for a while before a shot from Keegan Reim in the 69th minute. Harlow made the save to keep the Rams in the lead. The Golden Bears built some momentum with a corner kick in the 72nd minute. However, the Rams were able to stop that opportunity. Then, the Rams answered with a shot blocked in the 74th minute. The second half moved from one side of the field to the other, with the Rams maintaining that one-goal advantage.

The Rams continued the pressure with a shot from Valck, which hit the goalpost in the 79th minute. Then, the Rams had an 80th-minute shot get blocked. The Golden Bears would flip the pressure, looking for the equalizing goal. The Golden Bears earned a corner kick in the 83rd minute. It did not lead to a shot. However, the Golden Bears had a shot later in the 83rd minute go wide, and then two shots from Keegan Reim were saved by Harlow in the 85th and 86th minutes. Sam Riley continued the WNE pressure by sending the ball into the Suffolk penalty box. However, Harlow made the save. That was followed by Ryan Sunshine having a shot saved by Harlow in the 89th minute and a shot going wide of the net in the 90th minute. That was the final chance for the Golden Bears, and the game would end with the Rams winning 1-0. The final stats showed the Rams leading in shots 18-12, saves 6-4, corner kicks 4-3, and fouls 13-8. The Golden Bears led in shots on goal 6-5.
