How it Happened:

The Golden Bears and Nor'easters took to the ice in West Springfield, Massachusetts, for their first conference game of the season. The opening faceoff took place with Anthony Aureliano and Stefan Carney in net for WNE and UNE, respectively. Brayden Patricia won the opening faceoff for the Golden Bears, but UNE would control the puck after that. They had the opening three shots, with two saved by Aureliano. WNE answered with five of the next six shots and tested Carney with three shots. Carney made each save. UNE had three consecutive shots on goal and then earned a power play. WNE limited UNE to two power-play shots. UNE continued their pressure with eight of the next ten shots. The WNE defense did a good job of forcing wide or blocked shots, with only two of the eight shots getting to Aureliano. UNE then had eight shots in a row, with four shots on goal saved by Aureliano. WNE would answer with three of the next four shots. Carney was tested once and was equal to the test. UNE had a penalty called against them late in the opening period of play. WNE had one shot, and UNE had a shorthanded shot saved by Aureliano. UNE ended the first period with three of the final four shots in the period. Aureliano had to make two saves and did. The first period of play saw UNE leading in shots 33-12, shots on goal 18-4, and faceoff wins 11-10. WNE led in saves 18-4. Both teams had one power-play chance.

The second period of play saw UNE win the opening faceoff. WNE had the opening shot, but then UNE continued to apply pressure to WNE. They had four shots on goal to start the second. Jayden Price found Cam Bergeman in front of the goal. Bergeman had two shots before Anthony Sciucco had one shot saved and a second go into the back of the goal. UNE led 1-0 1:13 into the second period of play. The teams traded shots after that for most of the beginning of the second period. WNE would put together three in a row towards the middle of the second. Carney had to make two saves and did. UNE answered with a couple of shots saved by Aureliano. WNE was not shying away and were sending more and more shots in the direction of net. The UNE defense was pushing the shots wide, though. The teams traded possession of the puck back and forth. Carney and Aureliano made multiple saves. Neither goalie was looking to give up an inch. The Nor'easters had six shots in a row as the clock clicked past five minutes remaining in the second period of play. WNE answered with four shots of their own. Then, after trading a couple more shots, WNE ended the middle period of play by having four of the final five shots. However, UNE would not give up a goal, and the score was 1-0 after two periods of play. The second-period stats saw UNE leading in shots 26-24 and shots on goal 16-10. WNE led in saves 15-10, and faceoffs won 12-9. Neither team had a power-play chance in the second period.

The final period of play saw UNE extend their lead. They had the first six shots in a row. 1:19 into the final period, Jayden Price won the faceoff in the WNE defensive zone, and Cam Bergeman would send two shots at the WNE goal. The first shot was saved, but the second found the netting. UNE led 2-0. WNE would then get called for a penalty and at the 3:00 mark, Dominic Murphy found the back of the net with a power-play goal. Drew Olivieri found Jayden Price with a pass on the side of the goal. Price found Murphy, who sent the puck into the top of the goal. UNE was now up 3-0. WNE was called for goalie interference 4:07 into the third, and UNE earned another power-play. WNE limited them to just one shot on the power-play and kept the score at 3-0. UNE was called for a penalty about two minutes after that. However, a WNE penalty led to the teams playing 4-on-4 hockey twelve seconds later. The teams would trade shots for a little while, with WNE finding more shots on goal. Carney was not letting any shots by, though. UNE would tally six shots on goal in a row as the game started to come to a close between ten and five minutes left in the game. Aureliano made each save. WNE answered with a couple shots before David Wilcox would send the puck to Cam Bergeman, who found Jayden Price with a pass that led to a fourth UNE goal. UNE led 4-0 with 3:30 left in the game. UNE had the final four shots of the game. Three of the shots were on goal, and Aureliano made each save. UNE picked up the 4-0 win at the end of the contest. The final stats saw UNE leading in shots 85-45, shots on goal 55-20, and power-play goals 1-0. WNE had more saves, 51-20, and blocked shots 14-9. Both teams won 34 faceoffs.

Head coach Mike Young was asked for a comment after the contest concluded. "We had a lot of chances in the second period that, unfortunately, we didn't capitalize on, and against teams like that, you have to make hay on your chances. But we had a lot of fight in our game, and we're looking forward to taking them on again tomorrow," Young stated.
