Shimada’s Four-For-Four Afternoon, Schowerer’s Two Homers Not Enough, Golden Bears Drop Florida Opener 14-12

DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 16, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team got offensive production across their lineup on Saturday afternoon in their Florida opener, though would falter in the fourth inning and would not be able to come back, falling to the seventh-ranked Wisconsin La-Crosse Eagles by a final score of 14-12.

Records:
  • Western New England: 3-4
  • No. 7 Wisconsin La Crosse: 3-2
How it Happened:

An unconventional 1-2-3 inning to start the first inning would sit the Eagles down in order on quick work made by Matt Lauria. Western New England would strike for two runs in the bottom of the first inning after Kohtaro Shimada and Cody Waterbury would grab quick hits while Sean Jamieson and Andrew Florek would collect RBI singles of their own, giving the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. WNE would collect four hits in the opening inning. Wisconsin La Crosse answered in the top of the second inning with one run on an RBI single, though Western New England would come around with two more runs of their own in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead. In the bottom half, Cody Waterbury would come through with a two-RBI double down the right field line, scoring Canon Marshall, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Shimada, who singled.

The Eagles would put up a crooked number in the top of the third inning, amassing ten runs in the inning before recording three outs, giving the Eagles a commanding 11-4 lead. In the big inning for La Crosse, the Eagles would grab six hits while Western New England would commit two errors, pulling Lauria out of the game quickly. The junior would throw 2.1 innings for WNE, giving up eight runs and six hits while walking three on 60 pitches. Western New England would come around for five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, chipping away at the Eagles to get back in the game. Jack Loftus (HBP), Aaron Cole (single), and Henry Schowerer (HBP) would all reach with just one out in the inning, sending the bases loaded. Canon Marshall would take a bases-loaded walk to score one, Trey Young would grab an RBI single to left field, and Shimada would come around to clear the bases with a three-RBI double to left field, closing La Crosse's gap with the score at 11-9 entering the fourth inning.

Scoring would quiet for the next two innings as Lucas Kamoen would settle into relief duty for the Golden Bears, while Western New England would threaten in the bottom of the fifth with two runners on base though could not come across the dish. In the top of the sixth, Western New England would see the Eagles come around for two runs, committing their third error of the contest. Tyler Curtis would deliver a clean inning for the Golden Bears in the seventh, leaving the final three innings for a comeback.

Henry Schowerer would come around for a leadoff home run, his first career home run, in the bottom of the seventh, which cut into Wisconsin La Crosse's lead, 13-10. The Golden Bears would not be done there, as three straight singles would plate another run as Cody Waterbury would grab an RBI single to center field, seeing the deficit drop to just two runs at 13-11. The Eagles would get one run back on the Golden Bears in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single to left field, though that three-run lead would drop back down to a two-run lead when Schowerer cranked his second home run of the game to left field, seeing the score move to 14-12 in favor of UWLC. In the ninth, Aidan Gowaski would shut down the Eagles in order while the Golden Bears would threaten for run when Shimada and Loftus both reached, though WNE would leave the two on base, falling 14-12.
