Baseball Falls in Conference Opener to Top Ranked Endicott

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 23, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team dropped their conference opener on Saturday afternoon to d3baseball.com's top-ranked Gulls of Endicott College, falling 12-2 in a scheduled doubleheader. The second game of the doubleheader was rained out and will be rescheduled for Monday, March 25 at 3:30 pm at Endicott College in Beverly.

Records:
  • Western New England: 6-7, 0-1 CCC
  • 1 Endicott College: 12-1, 1-0 CCC
How it Happened:

The Golden Bears got early production from Cody Waterbury, who continued his tear of the baseball, grabbing a two-out  solo home run in the top of the first inning, giving Western New England an early lead over the top-ranked Gulls. WNE starting pitcher Jared Kuryan would set the Gulls down in order in the bottom of the inning, keeping Western New England in front. Aaron Cole and Henry Schowerer would reach base in the top of the second inning, though the threat would end with two outs as the Golden Bears would not be able to add any additional runs in the inning.

Endicott grabbed two hits in the bottom of the inning, though a strikeout and flyout would keep the Gulls from scoring. EC would explode for six runs in the bottom of the third inning, all coming with two outs. EC picked up RBIs on a ground out, two singles, a two-run home run, and a passed ball, as Endicott collected six runs on six hits while leaving one on base in the bottom of the third. The Gulls would add another run on a solo shot in the bottom of the third inning off WNE relief pitcher Jacob Hobart, leading 7-1 after four innings.

Western New England could not find their offense in the fifth, going down in order while the Gulls put up five more runs on the Golden Bears, grabbing three home runs in the inning, two solo home runs, and a three-run dagger, putting the Gulls in front 12-1.

Cody Waterbury would respond with his second home run of the afternoon at the leadoff spot in the top of the sixth inning, which left Endicott with a ten-run lead. Jack Loftus and John Bova would both single in the inning, though back-to-back strikeouts from Western New England would keep the Gulls in front by ten. Western New England would threaten for runs in the seventh when Paul Villecco and Kohtaro Shimada would reach in the inning, though that would be all as the contest would end with a ten-run lead after seven innings in conference play, seeing Western New England fall by a final score of 12-2.
