No. 1 Endicott Proves Too Much for WNE Baseball in Conference Play

BEVERLY, Mass. (March 25, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team wrapped up their doubleheader with the top-ranked Gulls of Endicott College on Monday afternoon, seeing the hosts grab a five-run lead in the first inning and never look back, as the Golden Bears would fall by a final score of 11-3.

Records:
  • Western New England: 6-8, 0-2 CCC
  • 1 Endicott College: 13-1, 2-0 CCC
How it Happened:

After dropping the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Auburndale, Florida, the Western New England baseball team looked to split with the top-ranked Gulls of Endicott College, though the Gulls would have other plans. WNE's Paul Villecco would single to open the game, though the Golden Bears would not be able to come away with anything else in the top of the inning. Endicott would explode for five runs in the bottom of the first inning, getting an RBI double, a two-run home run, a solo home run, and an RBI groundout in the inning, collecting five total hits without leaving a runner on base, taking the early advantage on the Golden Bears.

Nothing would come about for Western New England in the top of the second after Aaron Cole's two-out double would be stranded. WNE SP Matt Lauria would be pulled from the game after just one inning of work, though the Gulls would continue to hit WNE pitching, grabbing an RBI single in the bottom of the second off
Troy Donohue, giving Endicott a 6-0 lead. Western New England saw their first run cross the plate in the top of the third inning after a leadoff triple from Henry Schwoerer would come around to score on an RBI groundout by Paul Villecco, seeing Endicott lead 6-1. The Gulls would add an additional run in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead back to six runs at 7-1.

The score would remain the same until the top of the seventh, when the Golden Bears were back on the board for another run. Andrew Florek, Henry Schowerer, and Paul Villecco would all reach on walks while pinch runner Trey Young would score on a wild pitch, though that would be all for WNE, leaving three runners on base. Endicott would respond with four runs in the bottom of the seventh off Andrew Melone, grabbing a two RBI double and two RBI single in the inning off four total hits to take their largest lead of the afternoon, 11-2.

The Golden Bears would see Sean Jamieson belt his first home run of the season and sixth of his career with WNE, seeing the Golden Bears deficit drop to eight runs. The Golden Bears would threaten in the top of the ninth, seeing three Golden Bears come away with walks to load the bases, though Western New England would not be able to get timely hits in the game, falling by a final score of 11-3.
