Campagnone Nets Four Goals and Collects Three Assists, Leads Golden Bears Past Gordon College 17-8

Wenham, Mass. (April 13, 2024) – The Golden Bears traveled to Wenham, Massachusetts, for a CCC showdown with the Fighting Scots of Gordon College. The Golden Bears jumped to a 6-2 lead after the first. They then shutout Gordon College in the second, scoring eight more to push the lead to 14-2 after the first half of action. The Fighting Scots flipped the script by shutting out the Golden Bears in the third and scoring three. Then, in the fourth, both teams would score three, and the Golden Bears would go on to win the game 17-8. Nicholas Campagnone led the Golden Bears with four goals and seven total points. Carter Randall earned the win and picked up three saves. The Golden Bears won the game 17-8.

How it Happened:

The game started with Carter Randall and Colin Liscomb in net for the Golden Bears and Fighting Scots, respectively. The Golden Bears grabbed the lead 1:12 into the game. Nicholas Campagnone scored on an assist from Jack Houlden. The Golden Bears would then have a man-up opportunity but could not capitalize. Then, Nick Buccella would receive a pass from John Flemmi and tie the game at one with a goal 4:15 into the game. WNE would then score five goals in a row. It started with Jack Houlden scoring off an assist from Nicholas Campagnone 7:15 into the game. Then, Campagnone notched a second goal with 6:49 remaining in the quarter. Griffin LaRochelle followed that up with a goal with 6:24 remaining to push the lead to 4-1. Dylan Hanley scored 1:12 later to push the lead to four, and James Wrynn would notch a goal 1:03 after that to make the score 6-1. Both teams were called for penalties shortly after the goal. Neither penalty resulted in a goal. Marco Fernandez answered for Gordon College with 1:16 remaining in the first. The score was 6-2 after one-quarter of play. The stats showed the Golden Bears leading in shots 14-6, faceoffs won 8-1, and ground balls 14-6. Gordon College led 6-1 in saves. 

The second quarter saw the Golden Bears extend their lead by eight. It started twenty-four seconds into the quarter. James Wrynn found Dylan Hanley for a goal. 1:33 later, Dylan Hanley found Max Rudgers for a goal. Nine seconds after that, Dylan Hanley found Nicholas Campagnone for Campagnone's hat trick goal. Then, after some back-and-forth action, Gordon College was called for a penalty. The Golden Bears could not capitalize. Then, Griffin LaRochelle pushed the Golden Bear lead to 10-2 with 6:40 remaining. 1:43 later, Jack Houlden ripped a shot into the goal after a pass from Dylan Hanley. Nicholas Campagnone made it four goals scored on the day with a goal forty-five seconds later. Just after that, the Golden Bears had a man-up opportunity; however, they could not score during it. With 2:12 remaining in the first half, Joseph Contino scored to push the score to 13-2, and seven seconds later, Jack Houlden scored off an assist from Chris Catuosco. The Golden Bears led 14-2 at the end of the first half. The first-half stats saw the Golden Bears leading 26-10 in shots, 14-3 in faceoffs won, and 30-9 in ground balls. Gordon College led 9-3 in saves.

The second half began with Jonathan Salsbury entering the game in net for the Golden Bears. The quarter would see both sides go back and forth from side to side of the field. Not many goals were scored. A penalty was called on Gordon College 2:07 into the second half. However, the Golden Bears were not able to capitalize on the man-up opportunity. 4:18 into the third, John Flemmi notched an unassisted goal to make the score 14-3. The Golden Bears had another man-up opportunity a few minutes after that goal. Again, the Fighting Scots kept them from scoring. Then, after the Golden Bears were called for a penalty, Marco Fernandez scored a man-up goal for Gordon College off an assist from Jackson Wright. Both teams had man-up opportunities within the next few minutes. The defenses from both teams stood strong to not let up a goal. With one second remaining in the third quarter, Fernandez got another goal for Gordon College. Wright found Fernandez for the second goal in a row. After three-quarters of play, the Golden Bears led 14-5. The third-quarter stat line saw Gordon College lead in shots 7-5, faceoffs won 2-1, and ground balls 13-6. Both teams had one save.

The fourth saw the Fighting Scots get their fourth goal in a row 1:10 into the quarter. Marco Fernandez found Jackson Wright for the goal this time. It was on a man-up opportunity after the Golden Bears were called for a penalty. Brock Busa ended the run for Gordon College with a goal assisted by Nicholas Campagnone. Andrew Huta then had a goal assisted by Campagnone to push the score to 16-6 with 10:39 remaining in the game. 1:02 later, Seamus Gordon scored an unassisted goal for the Fighting Scots to pull the deficit back down to single digits. Kevin Morina regained the ten-goal lead for the Golden Bears with a goal with 6:19 left in the game. Griffin LaRochelle was credited with the assist for the goal. Gordon College was called for a penalty right after the goal, but again, the Golden Bears could not capitalize on the man-up opportunity. After some more back-and-forth action, Marco Fernandez scored off an assist from William McCormick with 2:24 remaining. That was the final goal of the game. The final stats saw the Golden Bears leading in shots 43-27; faceoffs won 19-8, and ground balls 49-29. The Fighting Scots had more saves throughout the game, 12-6. The final score was 17-8, Golden Bears.
