Randall's 11 Saves and Hanley's Seven Points Assist Golden Bears in Taking Down the Hawks

Springfield, Mass. (April 16, 2024) – The Golden Bears hosted the University of Hartford Hawks in a midweek clash. The Golden Bears would jump to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. Then, they would open up their lead to six and lead 9-3 at the half. The Golden Bears lengthened the lead to 13-5 during the third quarter, and in the final quarter of play, both teams would each score two to make the final score 15-7. Dylan Hanley led the Golden Bears in goals, with four, and total points, with seven. Carter Randall made 11 saves during the game for the Golden Bears to earn the win.

How it Happened:

With Christopher Ledwick and Carter Randall in goal, the game began. With it being the first meeting between the teams, it took some time for the teams to get into a rhythm. Both goalies made big saves to start the game. Both defenses caused many turnovers. The Hawks would pick up the first man-up opportunity of the game when the Golden Bears were called for a penalty. However, they could not capitalize. With 6:19 left in the first, Nicholas Campagnone notched the opening goal. Griffin LaRochelle had the assist. Then, Hanley doubled the lead with a goal, assisted by Nicholas Campagnone, which happened with 1:27 left in the first. Thirty-seven seconds later, Hanley tripled the lead with an unassisted goal. That would end the quarter. At the end of one, WNE led in shots 7-6, saves 4-3, and faceoff wins 3-1. Both teams had seven ground balls.

The second quarter started with a Jacob Roy goal, assisted by Dylan Hanley, thirty-four seconds into the quarter. A penalty was called on the Hawks 1:21 later, and the Golden Bears would capitalize when Jacob Roy scored off an assist from Thomas Labbe. Fifty seconds later, Aidan Kemp scored to put the Hawks on the board. Ryan Varano had the assist. Ethan Hunt then hit the post on an opportunity to cut the deficit to three. Hanley capitalized on the miss with a goal on the other end of the field. Griffin LaRochelle had the assist. Zachary Mein scored thirty-eight seconds later off an assist from Brian Madden to make the score 7-1 with 8:59 left in the first half. The Hawks would not quit, though. Within 1:03, Justin Pezzolesi and Ethan Hunt had a goal each. Maxton McPhee and Jake Ojert had the assists, respectively. With 2:13 left in the half, Jack Houlden extended the Golden Bear lead back to five after an assist from Brian Madden. Then, Dylan Hanley scored with 1:50 left to give the Golden Bears a 9-3 lead going into halftime. The first-half stats showed the Golden Bears leading in shots 23-17 and saves 9-8. Both teams had fourteen ground balls and seven faceoff wins. 

The third quarter saw Nicholas Forgione get a man-up goal for the Hawks after an assist from Ethan Hunt. Jacob Roy responded with a man-up goal, assisted by Dylan Hanley. Almost two minutes later, Thomas Labbe gave the Golden Bears a seven-goal lead, thanks to an assist from Dylan Hanley. With 6:10 left in the third, Maxton McPhee scored for the Hawks. 1:03 later, Griffin LaRochelle answered for the Golden Bears. LaRochelle would net the next and final goal of the quarter with 1:27 left in the third to put the Golden Bears up 13-5 entering the fourth quarter. The third quarter stats saw WNE lead in shots 14-5, ground balls 9-7, and faceoffs won 4-3. The Hawks led 8-2 in saves.

The final quarter of play got started with a Justin Pezzolesi goal 1:13 into the quarter. Jack Houlden got a pass from Zachary Mein and answered the Hawk goal with one, 1:31 later. Maxton McPhee cut the Golden Bear lead to seven with 8:39 remaining in the game. Then, Aidan Ezra hit the post, trying to cut the deficit to six. With 6:19 left in the game, Nicholas Campagnone scored the final goal of the game unassisted. Late in the fourth quarter, Jonathon Salsbury would replace Carter Randall in goal during play. Ryan Varano would try to score on the new goalie but hit the post. Then, Salsbury made two saves to finish out the game for the Golden Bears. The Golden Bears finished the game with more shots 48-32 and ground balls 29-26. Both teams won thirteen faceoffs, and the Hawks had more saves, 21-13. The Golden Bears won the game 15-7.
