Records:
- Western New England: 15-14
- Keene State: 15-17
How it Happened:
With
Tanner Wall taking the hill for the Golden Bears in the single game against the Owls, the first-year would quickly get out of the first inning without giving up a run. Western New England would see two batters,
Paul Villecco and
Cody Waterbury, reach base on a walk in the bottom of the first, though the Golden Bears would not get the early hit they needed to get on the board first. Keene State would be the first to score off
Wall, coming in the top of the second inning after Keene's Shea Zina connected on a sacrifice fly, giving the Owls the 1-0 lead. Keene State was not done there, seeing a wild pitch plate another run, giving KSC a 2-0 lead after the top of the second.
Western New England would have a quick bottom of the second, though they would come away with a run after
Ryan Montini would double to left center field to open the game and would advance on two flyouts after
Aaron Cole would collect the RBI on the flyout, giving the Golden Bears their first run of the game, trailing 2-1 after two innings of play. Keene State would double their run total in the top of the third after Shea Zina was back to do more damage to the Golden Bears, coming away with a two-RBI single to left field, scoring Keene's Chatfield and Ahlers and giving the Owls a 4-1 lead. Keene State would take that lead into the bottom of the fourth when Western New England provided an offensive spark.
Western New England's
Cody Waterbury would lead off with a single to left field, followed by a walk issued to
Sean Jamieson, putting the first two runners on with no outs.
Andrew Florek would be called into pinch-hit duties in the bottom of the fourth inning and would have an immediate impact, launching a three-run home run to right field, tying the game at four after four innings of play. The Golden Bears would continue to score in the bottom of the fifth inning after
Paul Villecco made his way around the bases after being hit by a pitch on a two-out RBI triple from
Sean Jamieson, his 100
thhit as a Golden Bear, which gave Western New England the 5-4 lead after five innings.
Western New England would see
Alex Slezak come in relief for Wall and toss 3.2 nearly perfect innings, giving up one hit and two strikeouts, not allowing any offensive momentum to the visiting Owls. The Golden Bears offense would threaten in the bottom of the seventh when the bases were loaded with one out, though Keene's George Young would shut the door on
Montini and
Florek, keeping WNE ahead by just a single run. Keene State would use that momentum in the top of the eighth inning and get their tying run of the game on a wild pitch from WNE relief pitcher
Lucas Kamoen. Keene State's Evan Cali would quickly break the tie with a single to right field, scoring two Owls and giving Keene State a 7-5 lead. With two innings to make something happen, Western New England would come up short in the eighth inning after putting two runners on with two outs, while Keene's Troy Brennan breezed through the ninth, getting three strikeouts, looking to secure his third save of the season and the win for the Owls by a final score of 7-5.
