SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 1, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team could not compete with the 25
th-ranked Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon, falling 16-9 behind Eastern's 20-hit performance.

How it Happened:
The first two innings could be quiet for both teams, as the teams could not come away with an early lead.
Greg Nivison went the first two innings for the Golden Bears, surrendering just two hits to the high-he teamspowered Warriors offense. The Golden Bears were held hitless through the first two frames. Eastern would grab the first three runs of the game in the top of the third inning off
Robert Zawacki as all nine batters would come to the plate, giving the visitors the early 3-0 edge.
Western New England would not back away from the tall task at hand, coming away with four runs in the bottom of the third to grab the lead after three innings of play. Henery Schowerer would lead off the inning with a single, while
Paul Villecco would follow suit.
Sean Jamieson got in on the hit parade with one out in the inning, packing the bases for the Golden Bears. After the Warriors got a pop out from
Jack Loftus,
Kohtaro Shimada would work the count full and pick up a walk, getting WNE's first run on the board.
Villecco would advance to home on a wild pitch, while
Andrew Florek would beat out a grounder to first base to continue the inning for the Golden Bears, tying the game at three.
Aaron Cole would deliver an RBI single, scoring Western New England's final run of the inning and taking a 4-3 lead.
Eastern Connecticut would take exception to Western New England's lead, piling on runs in the top of the fourth off
Todd Grammatico and never looking back from there. The 25
th-ranked Warriors got out of the inning with a seven-run lead, taking an 11-4 lead quickly. Eastern would continue their scoring in the top of the sixth when Zach Donohue would double for the second time in the game to score another run for the visitors, giving the Warriors a 12-4 lead after six innings of play.
Western New England would be quieted with the bats through the middle innings, though they would come alive late, putting together five runs and five hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to get back within seven runs, trailing 16-4.
Paul Villecco came away with a two-RBI single in the inning, while
Sean Jamieson and
Jack Loftus both earned RBIs for the Golden Bears, who would trail 16-9 after the eighth inning. The Golden Bears would not be able to make a full comeback over the top-ranked Warriors, falling by seven runs, 16-9.
Inside the Diamond:
- WNE's 11 hits were not enough on Wednesday as the Golden Bears surrendered 20 hits to the red-hot offense of Eastern Connecticut.
- Henry Schowerer was 3/4 at the plate for the Golden Bears, while Paul Villecco went 2/5 with two RBIs to lead WNE.
- Zach Donohue grabbed three hits and four RBIs to lead Eastern in the win.
- The Golden Bears tossed ten walks in the loss and gave up 15 earned runs.
