BEVERLY, Mass. (May 9, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team, seeded fifth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament, nearly knocked off the nation's top-ranked Gulls of Endicott College, though a costly Western New England error would spark a run for Endicott, grabbing five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Golden Bears by a final score of 9-5. Records:
- No. 5 Western New England: 21-19
- No. 1 Endicott College: 39-2
How it Happened:
An unlikely starter for the Golden Bears toed the rubber to get the game started in the bottom of the first inning, as
Troy Donohue would get the ball for the Golden Bears and would give up just two hits to the high-powered offense of Endicott through the first two innings of play. The Gulls would crack the code of
Donohue in the bottom of the third inning after the Western New England offense, which poured on 28 hits and 26 runs in their last outing, grabbed just two hits through their first three innings of plate appearances. The Gulls would put runners on second and third with one away and would see Johnny Mulready ground out and collect an RBI to give Endicott a 1-0 lead. Brendan O'Neil would double for the Gulls in their next at-bat, coming away with another RBI, while TJ Liponis would break the score open with a two-run home run to left center field, giving Endicott a 4-0 lead after three innings of play.
The Golden Bears would go down in order in the top of the fourth inning, though the offense would find their bats in the top of the fifth inning in a big way.
Aaron Cole and
Kohtaro Shimada singled to open the inning, while
Paul Villecco followed suit to get the bases loaded with just one out in the frame.
Ryan Montini would open the scoring for the Golden Bears, collecting an RBI single through the right side of the diamond, putting Western New England on the scoreboard. WNE's next batter,
John Bova, collected a two-RBI double, plating two more for the Golden Bears, as Western New England would begin to get to Endicott's ace, Jordan Gottesman. The Golden Bears strung together four hits in a row in the inning off Gottesman, as
Sean Jamieson would deliver the final blow to the Gulls starter, producing a two-RBI single to give Western New England a 5-4 lead.
Donohue continued on into the bottom of the fifth inning, where the senior lefty would get three fly-outs after the Gulls would put a runner on second on a one-out ground rule double. Western New England would come away with a chance at more runs in the top of the sixth inning after
Shimada,
Henry Schowerer, and
Paul Villecco would reach, filling the bases with just one out. Western New England would not be able to take advantage of the opportunity, leaving the bases full in the inning.
After the Gulls were set down again in the sixth, the bats would awaken for the home team in the bottom of the seventh. Endicott would put runners on first and second with just one out as Brendan O'Neil would crack a ground ball that would be muffed on the infield by the Golden Bears, who had the potential to turn two and end the inning, which sparked a rally for the Gulls, who tied the game on the grounder. Endicott would grab a sacrifice fly, an RBI walk, and a two-RBI single to score five times in the inning on two hits while leaving two runners on base.
Troy Donohue lasted 6.2 innings for Western New England, throwing 130 pitches, giving up seven hits and eight runs, four earned, while walking three and striking out two.
Western New England would put two runners on base in the top of the eighth inning, but would not score. Endicott would be set down in order by
Lucas Kamoen in the bottom of the eighth, ough the Golden Bears would, unfortunately, follow suit in the top of the ninth as Kyan Bagshaw would erase the Golden Bears chance at a ninth in-ing comeback, sending WNE to an elimination game. Endicott defeated the Golden Bears 9-5.
