SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 1, 2025) – The Western New England field hockey team played to a difficult 2-1 loss on Wednesday night to the 16
th-ranked Mammoths of Amherst College, collecting just one shot offensively, coming in the fourth quarter.

How it Happened:
- The game started with Alex Tardugno in goal for WNE and Kate Grady on the other end of the field for Amherst.
- The first quarter saw WNE get off to a slow start, with Amherst having each chance.
- Amherst had eight shots, three shots on goal, and two corners. However, no goals were scored, and the teams were stuck at zero after the first quarter.
- Amherst kept the pressure up in the second quarter, and on their second shot of the quarter, Bella Kim scored off an assist from Scarlette Liftin in the 19th minute of the game.
- Amherst kept sending the shots and penalty corners at WNE after that.
- The defense forced errant shots to keep WNE from falling behind by more than a goal going into halftime.
- WNE trailed 1-0 at the break, had fewer shots 14-0, fewer shots on goal 4-0, and less corners 4-0. WNE had more saves 3-0 at halftime.
- The third quarter saw Amherst double their lead.
- They had a shot and two corners before Dylan Bloom found Genevieve Caruso for the second Amherst goal. They led 2-0 in the 36th minute.
- Amherst continued to take it to the Western New England defense but Alex Tardugno continued to stay strong between the pipes for the blue and gold, making three total third-quarter saves.
- Tardugno opened the fourth quarter by stopping Chloe Agopian's chance to keep Amherst ahead by two.
- Western New England picked up its first opportunity at goal with six minutes remaining in the game, picking up a penalty corner from the chance. Tessa Ebreo inserted the corner, slapping a pass to Analise Trani, who then found Haley Kaczka, who fired a shot into the back of the net, cutting Amherst's lead in half.
- From there, the Mammoths controlled play and defeated the Golden Bears by a final score of 2-1.
Inside the Lines:
- Haley Kaczka's sixth goal of the season was the lone shot for the Golden Bears on the night.
- Amherst's Bella Kim scored the first goal in the 19th minute, with an assist from Scarlette Liftin. They also picked up a tally from Genevieve Caruso for their second goal of the game, the eventual game-winner.
- Alex Tardugno made seven saves for the blue and gold in the loss.
- Amherst took ten penalty corners in the game while WNE had just one, scoring their lone goal.
