Chevalier and Hartnett Lead the Golden Bears to Victory Behind Enemy Lines, 2-1

WENHAM, Mass. (October 11, 2025) – WNE and Gordon College competed on the pitch of the Brigham Athletic Complex on Saturday. WNE took the lead thanks to a Tess Chevalier header shot that found the netting in the 33rd minute. Meghan Hartnett would double the lead in the second half, and even though Gordon's Eowyn Lapp would score for the Fighting Scots in the 67th minute, WNE would hold on for the 2-1 win in Wenham, Massachusetts.

Records:

  • Western New England: 5-4-4 (3-2-1)
  • Gordon College: 4-8-1 (2-3-0)

How it Happened:

First Half:

  • Emily Bengtson and Ainsley Napolitano were the starting goalies for Gordon and WNE on Saturday.
  • The contest began with the team's trading possession of the ball.
  • Gordon earned the first shot of the game, with a shot going over the goal from Samantha Kenney.
  • Gordon continued to put pressure on WNE with four more shots and a corner kick. Eowyn Lapp had a shot saved by Napolitano.
  • WNE would answer with an Ella Lupo shot on goal, which Bengtson had to save. WNE followed that up with a second shot, which went over the goal.
  • The teams would trade shots after that, but neither team could get a shot on goal.
  • That was until Tess Chevalier found the game's opening goal. The play started with a corner kick, which was deflected to Emily Smith, who sent a rocket of a shot at the goal. It rattled the crossbar and fell to Chevalier, who sent a header shot into the bottom-right corner of the goal. WNE led 1-0 in the 33rd minute.
  • Ava Forbes-Smith would answer with a shot saved by Napolitano.
  • Gordon had another shot saved by Napolitano from Julia Evans in the 37th minute, and that was the last major chance from either team. WNE took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • At the halftime break, Gordon had more shots, 11-7, and shots on goal, 3-2. WNE had more fouls, 8-0, and more saves, 3-1. Both teams had three corner kick opportunities.

Second Half:

  • The second half started with Gordon sending pressure at WNE once again by earning a corner kick chance three minutes into the half.
  • However, it was WNE who swung the momentum after that with a Liza Pinette shot at goal. Bengtson made the save.
  • In the 53rd minute, Liza Pinette found Meghan Hartnett running towards the goal. Hartnett would chip the ball over the goalie and into the goal to double the WNE lead.
  • Gordon would answer, though. They had three quick shots in a row. One had to be saved by Napolitano and was.
  • Gordon kept the pressure up, and after a few more shots and corner kick chances, Ava Forbes-Smith found Eowyn Lapp in the 67th minute to cut the WNE lead in half, 2-1.
  • WNE would respond to that goal. They had a couple of corners and found a shot on goal, but Bengtson made the save to keep Gordon down by only one goal.
  • The Fighting Scots would try to find that equalizing goal, but were unsuccessful against the strong WNE defense. Gordon had a few chances but could not find the back of the goal.
  • WNE would hold on in the end to pick up another conference victory, 2-1, versus Gordon College.

Inside the Lines:

  • WNE took down Gordon College on Saturday to pick up their third conference victory of the season.
  • Tess Chevalier scored the game's opening goal in the 33rd minute after a shot from Emily Smith hit the crossbar, and Chevalier was able to send a header shot into the bottom-right corner of the goal. WNE led 1-0.
  • Meghan Hartnett would chip a shot over the goalie in the 53rd minute after a through-pass from Liza Pinette, to double the Golden Bear lead, 2-0.
  • Gordon cut into the WNE lead thanks to an Eowyn Lapp goal in the 67th minute. Ava Forbes-Smith had the assist. WNE still led 2-1.
  • The full-time stats were opposite the final score. Gordon led in shots, 19-12, and shots on goal, 6-5.
  • WNE would lead in corner kick chances, 6-5, fouls, 16-4, and saves, 5-3.
