Three Golden Bear Goal-Scorers Help WNE Ground Falcons in Nonconference Finale, 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 21, 2025) – WNE hosted Fitchburg State on Tuesday afternoon, with not a cloud in the sky, for their final nonconference game of the season. WNE would dominate the statistics in almost every facet of the game. That included goals, which saw WNE's Meghan Hartnett, Sophia Scyocurka, and Liza Pinette each score to lead WNE past Fitchburg State, 3-0.

Records:

  • Western New England: 6-6-4 (3-4-1)

How it Happened:

First Half:

  • From the start, WNE would send pressure at Fitchburg State. Gabby Sansone had the first shot of the game for WNE.
  • Gabby Sansone had the second shot too, and this one glanced off the crossbar and out of play in the 7th minute.
  • The Falcons would respond with a push down the field resulting in a corner but that was their lone chance of the first half.
  • WNE would send shot after shot at the goal after that, with Herron making a few saves versus WNE.
  • WNE gained momentum as the first half progressed, eventually leading to a WNE goal.
  • Meghan Hartnett would take a corner kick for WNE in the 37th minute. Hartnett sent a banana kick into the bottom left corner of the goal and WNE had the 1-0 lead late in the first half.
  • WNE continued to attack the Fitchburg defense with shot after shot to end the first half. None of the shots found the back of the net, and WNE led 1-0 at the halftime break.
  • First half stats were heavily in favor of WNE. WNE had more shots, 14-0, more shots on goal, 4-0, more corner kicks, 4-1, and more fouls, 9-5.
  • Fitchburg State had more saves, 3-0.

Second Half:

  • The second half got underway and Fitchburg State would take the first shot in the 48th minute. An avalanche of WNE shots followed that.
  • Hartnett would test Herron, looking for a second goal, but the shot was saved.
  • Then, Stella Liebler took a free kick on the left side of the penalty box and struck the crossbar. WNE still led 1-0.
  • Herron made a few more saves after that to keep the Falcon deficit stuck at one for the time being.
  • Molly Jenkins would get the lone Falcon shot on goal, but the new goalie for WNE, Adara Boucher, would make the save to keep WNE in the lead.
  • After the Golden Bears held off a few more attacking chances from the Falcons, Hartnett and Liza Pinette tested the goalie once again. Herron answered the call with two saves.
  • Pinette's shot deflected off the goalie to Sophia Scyocurka, who netted Scyocurka's first career WNE goal in the 83rd minute. WNE led 2-0.
  • WNE would not stop there. Ava dos Santos had a shot get past the goalie, but the defense made a save.
  • Then, in the 85th minute, Liza Pinette received a pass from Gabby Sansone, which Pinette slotted past the goalie and WNE led 3-0.

Coach's Corner:

Kristin Hensinger was asked how this win helps the team going into the Suffolk game. "Getting some goals and having some success offensively definitely helps. We were able to try a few different combinations and people in different spots to see if we can generate some more sparks offensively, which I think helped," Hensinger commented.

Sophia Scyocurka was then asked what was going through her mind when she scored and how the goal came to fruition. "I saw Liza cut in and the ball happened to just bounce to my foot, so I was thinking just get the ball on frame and then when I saw it go in, I felt really relieved because we were only up 1-0 at that point so it felt good to get the second goal to seal up the win," Scyocurka mentioned. When asked how it felt to get the win, Scyocurka said, "Great! Obviously, because Saturday we didn't win, so getting our momentum back on to take on Suffolk on Saturday means a lot."

Up Next on the Schedule:

  • The Golden Bears will host Suffolk University on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at noon, as the team will recognize their seniors as part of their Senior Day festivities.
